Future Still Unclear for Pier 5

Wondering what ever happened with that request for proposals the city put out earlier this year for in the Navy Yard?

Turns out, not much.

The Boston Redevelopment Authority asked interested parties to submit project ideas for future use of Pier 5 -- the last large swath of open land in the Navy Yard. The space, between and , is vacant and fenced off, and has been for years.

But the July deadline for proposals came and went and only one project idea was submitted, according to Susan Elsbree, a spokeswoman for the BRA. It was for an "innovation center" on the pier (). But after review, BRA staff rejected the idea, essentially saying it was not financially possible.

So what's next?

Elsbree told Patch BRA staff are evaluating next steps before taking any. It's possible the market isn't right for development, or the terms of their request for proposals will be tweaked. There is no timeline at the moment, spelling out when or if the BRA will seek additional proposals.

And until then, Pier 5 remains vacant and fenced off.
