Christmas Gift Ideas for Charlestown History Buffs

Looking for that special Christmas gift for a Charlestown resident past, present or future?

The Charlestown Preservation Society is selling copies of their first ever homeowner's guide. Called, "Charlestown History and Architecture: Guide for Homeowners, Residents, and Visitors," the book contains historical information about local buildings and details about architectural styles, features and preservation methods, as well as resources for homeowners.     

Whether you're an out-of-towner or a longtime resident, a new homeowner, a real estate agent selling property in town or someone hiring a contractor to renovate your Charlestown home, this guide is exactly what you need, according to the Charlestown Preservation Society's description of the book.

"Whether answering your history questions or finding quintessential preservation guidance in construction matters, the new Charlestown Preservation Society publication will become your usual go-to resource for delving into many things Charlestown," the description states.

Many of the society's dedicated members and volunteers worked together to collect details about the Charlestown community, its history, properties and development.

"The handbook has been in the making for some time, and great care went into doing it right," Charlestown Preservation Society members wrote. "The clear maps, concise historic-timelines and gathered background data along with the many crisp drawings and photos make this our 'Green Mile guide.'"

Copies of the "Charlestown History and Architecture" are available at Ace Hardware, Bunker Hill Florist, Joy of Old and Olivia Browning. The Charlestown Preservation Society is asking for a donation of $15 per book, paid with cash or check.

• The Boston Firefighters Burn Foundation is selling its 2012 Limited Edition Collectible Christmas Ornament to raise funds to help children who have suffered terrible burns from fire. This year's ornament depicts a young boy on hockey skates with a fire helmet on his head, a baseball and football in his hands. It is available in Charlestown at the St. Francis de Sales rectory and at all weekend masses for a $15 offering. 

• St. Francis de Sales is also selling a commemorative 14 oz. mug featuring an artist's rendition of the Celtic Cross located in the church cemetery. The mug costs $12 or $20 if purchased with St. Francis' annual Christmas calendar. For more information, email stfran303@aol.com.
