ADVISORY: Expect Massive Traffic on I-93 for Columbus Day Weekend

The state is warning that road work on Saturday and Sunday may cause backups as long as 20 miles on I-93.

If you're driving this Columbus Day weekend, avoid I-93 northbound in Boston.

The state has issued a travel advisory that road work will narrow I-93 to one lane from the Tip O'Neil Tunnel to the Zakim Bridge, according to the Herald. Backups of 20 miles are expected for northbound travelers.

The closures are planned to start Friday at 10 p.m. and go until 10 a.m. Saturday. Another work session is scheduled for Saturday 10 p.m. to Sunday 10 a.m. For a complete description of the work and lane closures, see the state's advisory.

Because of the nature of the work, rain could force postponement. For traffic updates before you get behind the wheel, see the JP Patch traffic page. If you use Twitter, you can get roadwork updates from the Department of Transportation.
