5 Things: Tree Pickup, Upcoming Kids' Concert

Deadlines, events and other items you should know about on Jan. 14 in Charlestown.

1. Mix of clouds and sun: There is a slight chance of showers before noon today, with the rest of the day cloudy, gradually becoming sunny, according to the National Weather Service. It will also be windy, with gusts up to 29 miles per hour. High: 52, Low: 32.

2. Tree pickup: This week is your final chance to get rid of your Christmas tree at the curb. The Boston Public Works Department will collect trees during regular recycling pickup through Jan. 18. Be sure to remove all ornaments, decorations and stand and place the tree on the curb by 7 a.m. on your recycling day (in Charlestown, that’s Wednesdays). Do not put trees in plastic bags.

3. Upcoming children’s concert: The Toe Jam Puppet Band is scheduled to perform at the Charlestown Knights of Columbus hall on Sunday, Feb. 10. The 4 p.m. concert will feature original songs, shadow puppetry and storytelling. Tickets cost $10 each and can be purchased in advance at charlestownnurseyschool.com or at the door.

4. Apply now: Mayor Thomas Menino is looking for new members for his ONEin3 Council. The council is open to civic-minded individuals ages 20-34 who want to collaborate on projects designed to engage Boston’s young adult population. Applications are being accepted for the 24-member council through Jan. 25.

5. Movie Mondays: Drop by Boston Public Library’s Central Branch (700 Boylston St.) today at 6 p.m. for a free showing of “Beverly Hills Cop” (1984, 105 minutes). This is part of a film series celebrating Black History Month.
