5 Things: Kennedy Center Toy Drive, Contest Voting

Deadlines, events and other items should know about today, Dec. 18, in Charlestown.

1. Rainy: Expect showers today with a possible thunderstorm during the day, according to the National Weather Service. High: 57, Low, 38.

2. Kennedy Center toy drive: The Kennedy Center is wrapping up its annual Toy Drive, which provided toys, clothes, games and more for hundreds of children living in Charlestown. The response to donation requests has been great, but the number of families needing assistance this year is larger than ever. You can help by sending donations to: John F. Kennedy Family Service Center, 23 A Moulton St., Charlestown, MA 02129. Note “toy drive” in the memo line.

3. Homework help: The Charlestown Branch of the Boston Public Library offers a free drop-in homework help program for students in grades K-8. High school-age mentors from Boston's public and private schools provide the academic support. The program runs daily most weeks, Monday through Thursday, from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Visit the library website for more information.

4. Charlestown calendars: The Charlestown library is selling 2013 calendars featuring images and history of the Charlestown parks for $5 each. The calendars are being sold at the library and also at the Joy of Old. All proceeds are used for library programs.

5. Voting is on for Boston-wide Contest: Today is the last day to vote for your favorite business in Boston’s Deck the Windows holiday decoration contest. See a list of finalists and vote on the city website. The winner will be announced on Thursday.
