Veterinarian Aims to Open Clinic in Mishawum Park

The Mishawum Park clinic would be the second veterinary facility to open in Charlestown in 2012.

It may soon be twice as easy to own a pet in Charlestown, as a second veterinarian this year is on track to open a medical practice for pets in a Mishawum Park commercial bay.

Dr. Olga Iglikova presented her plan recently to the Charlestown Neighborhood Council. The facility, she said, would handle routine maladies at affordable prices. The facility would not board animals overnight and would not perform complex surgeries—though it would provide simple ones. Iglikova, who said she would run the practice herself, said she would keep its medicine stores to a minimum.

“We don’t use drugs that will attract people from the streets,” Iglikova said. “[We would have] nothing that you could inject and have any kind of fun out of it.”

Iglikova said she has 20 years of veterinary experience, with 15 years of that experience coming from Boston-based clinics.

The Charlestown Neighborhood Council’s basic services committee will hold a public hearing on the matter . Should Iglikova get the go-ahead and open her practice before the end of the year, her practice would be the second new veterinary facility to open in Charlestown in 2012.

The Charlestown Veterinary Hospital, at 24 Roland Street, opened for business in April. It provides a broader array of services than Iglikova proposes for her Main Street location.

I don't think Charlestown needs two vets. There are already enough in the surrounding area, and with the one that opened in April in Charelstown, more than enough filled the void in Charlestown. I just looked up Dr. Iglikova on yelp, and I'm not sure this is the type of person Charlestown needs. She already has 3 other clinics, so how can she run a 4th all by herself?

Why do we need another vet? Or another pizza place? Or another pet boutique? Or nail salon? Or convenience store? Aren't there any original ideas any more when it comes to retail space?

If she wants to open up a private practice/business with her money, why should it matter what kind of business she wants to open? The woman wants to expand her business in a viable (according to her) market. It shouldn't be up to you, me or that God awful corrupt CNC to tell her yea or nay. Good luck Dr. Olga.
