Spaulding Rehab Grand Opening Set April 21

The newly constructed hospital in the Charlestown Navy Yard will welcome patients soon.

Charlestown residents are invited to come get to know their new Navy Yard neighbor, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, during a community health fair and open house on Sunday, April 21.

The free event will be held outside of Spaulding’s new building at 300 First Ave. (at the corner of 16th Street and First Avenue) from 1-5 p.m.

Guests can take tours of the new building, meet and receive autographs from members of the New England Patriots and New England Revolution (Spaulding is the official rehabilitation hospital for both teams), sample healthy snacks and take advantage of health information and screenings offered by Spaulding clinicians, including blood pressure, massages, grip strength, concussion awareness, running screenings and autism awareness.

Charlestown resident Karson Tager of the Karson and Kennedy In the Morning show will be in attendance along with members of the Mix 104.1 Street team.

And children can participate in several activities, including a Teddy Bear Clinic where they can bring their favorite stuffed friend for a check-up.

The event will be held rain or shine.

Parking is limited but will be available to Charlestown residents from 12-6 p.m. in the Navy Yard’s Building 199 garage. Public transportation is encouraged; residents are reminded that the MBTA Bus 93 route drops off riders just steps away from the hospital.

A new Hubway bike share station is being installed next to the hospital but will not be on line in time for the grand opening, according to Spaulding spokesman Tim Sullivan.

Spaulding serves people who are recovering from and adapting to a range of traumatic injuries including spinal cord and brain injuries, strokes, amputations and burns. The recently completed $220 million building project in the Navy Yard will provide a new home for Spaulding, replacing the current headquarters at 125 Nashua St.

The eight-story building includes private rooms for up to 132 patients, including a pediatric unit, as well as space for outpatient services, a rehabilitation pool, public cafeteria and conference rooms that can be reserved by community groups.

Patients will be moved from the Nashua Street location to the Navy Yard building the weekend following the opening celebration, Sullivan said.

Charlestown residents planning to attend the grand opening are encouraged to RSVP at SRHtours@partners.org. For directions and more information about the new hospital, visit www.newspauldinghospital.org
