Week in Review: New Neighbor Brigade, Charlestown Farmers Market Opens

  1. New Charlestown Neighbor Brigade Seeking Volunteers—Two local women recently started a Charlestown chapter of the Neighbor Brigade, a group of volunteers ready to help out when someone in the community is in need.
  2. New Souvenir Shop Opens in Charlestown—A new Charlestown business offers Freedom Trail travelers a place to stop off between the USS Constitution and the Bunker Hill Monument for a cold drink and a few trinkets to commemorate their visit.
  3. ‘Charlestown Live’ To Host Town Hall Meetings with City Council Candidates—BNN-TV's "Charlestown Live" will sponsor a series of three Town Hall meetings starting on Aug. 14 with all 19 candidates for the Boston City Council at-large race being invited to participate.
  4. Charlestown Farmers Market Kicks Off 2013 Season—The Kennedy Center's Charlestown Farmer’s Market opened for business on Wednesday, July 10 and will return every Wednesday from 2 p.m. to dusk through the end of October.
  5. Michelle Wu Visits Charlestown—Boston City Council candidate Michelle Wu dropped by Charlestown on Wednesday, July 10 to talk with local residents at Peter Looney Park.
  6. Spaulding Open House and Health Fair Rescheduled for July 20—The Charlestown community is invited to come celebrate the opening of the new Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in the Navy Yard during a free open house and health fair set Saturday, July 20.
  7. Police Reports: Man Stabbed in Argument on Corey Street—Two women were arrested following a stabbing incident on Corey Street on Saturday, July 6.
  8. Crew Seen Filming New Denzel Washington Movie in Charlestown—Film crews were around Charlestown on Tuesday, July 9 doing work on the new movie "The Equalizer," starring Denzel Washington.
  9. Charlestown Youth Hockey Looking for Coaches—Charlestown Youth Hockey is accepting applications for coaches for the upcoming 2013-14 season.

  1. Cops Will Dig Up Suspected Strangler’s Grave—Officials on Thursday cited a technological breakthrough allowing them to identify Albert DeSalvo as the killer of Mary Sullivan, the last murder in a string of 1960s killings by the "Boston Strangler." As a result, police obtained a warrant to exhume DeSalvo's remains to further prove the case.
  2. Marathon Bombing Suspect Pleads Not Guilty—The man accused of bombing the Boston Marathon was arraigned in federal court today on 30 charges including possession of weapons of mass destruction and murder. Seventeen of the charges carry a potential death penalty sentence. 
  3. City Announces Ballot Order for Sept. 24 Preliminary Election—Boston's Election Department announced the ballot order on Thursday, July 11, after the candidates' names were entered into a drum and pulled out in the order that appears on the list.
  4. Mayoral Candidates Share Environmental Views—Nine Boston mayoral candidates opined on carbon emissions, public transportation and how to make the city as environmentally friendly as possible during the Boston Green Mayoral Forum held at Suffolk University on Tuesday, July 9.
  5. Who’s That at Your Door? Could Be the Boston Census—If you didn't fill out a city census form by mail, expect to hear a knock on your door this summer.
