Glen Doherty Foundation To Hold First Event Nov. 24

The former Navy SEAL killed in Libya in September was the son of a Charlestown resident.

The son of a Charlestown man is being remembered with a new foundation formed in his memory after he was killed in a terrorist attack in Libya in September.

Glen Doherty, 42, was one of four Americans killed in an attack against the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya on Sept. 12, 2012. A former Navy SEAL, he was working in Libya as a private security contractor.

"Although the attack began on Sept. 11, Glen fought hard throughout the night and saved many before succumbing to a mortar attack in the early hours of Sept. 12," a member of the newly formed Glen Doherty Foundation wrote in a press release. "Glen died serving with men he respected, protecting the freedoms we enjoy as Americans and doing something he loved."

Quigley is serving as president of the Glen Doherty Foundation, a new 501 (c) (3) charity organization that is "dedicated to honoring and preserving the memory of Glen Doherty," according to the press release.

"It is a way to honor Glen’s life and his beliefs by bringing education and recreation to those in need," the press release states. "By paying forward Glen’s love for learning and his passion for igniting the human spirit through adventure, the goal of the foundation is to bring joy and personal advancement into the lives of many."

Also serving on the Glen Doherty Foundation Board of Directors are: Sean Lake, director; Thomas Donahue, treasurer; and Michael Shannon, clerk.

"The focus of the foundation is providing current and former special operations professionals, from all branches of government, the means necessary to transition and succeed in civilian life. The focus also lies in enabling the children and families of these soldiers to have the ability to mature and grow through recreation," the press release states.

The foundation will offer scholarships, subsidies, grants and gifts for special operations professionals and their families.

Members of the Glen Doherty Foundation will kick off their fundraising efforts on Saturday, Nov. 24 with a special event from 5-8 p.m. at Barlow’s Restaurant, 241 A St., in South Boston. A $20 cover is suggested to benefit the foundation, and a raffle and prizes will also be featured.

Anyone who cannot attend the event but would like to contribute can submit donations online at glendohertyfoundation.org/donate/.
