Hubway Helmet Vending Machines Coming Soon to Boston

Since the bike sharing system launched in 2011, organizers have struggled with one issue: How to improve safety by providing helmets.

By Bret Silverberg

The city has had an issue finding a solution to a longstanding problem with Boston’s extremely popular Hubway bicycle share system: How to provide helmets.

The Boston Globe reports that the solution will come in the form of helmet vending machines to be placed at the Boston Public Library Hubway station in Copley Square and three others this month.

Though not yet decided, one of those locations could be North Station, according to the report.

The machines, produced by South Boston-based HelmetHub, will vend helmets for rent or purchase by credit card. The helmets will likely cost $2 to rent, and if a helmet is not returned within 24 hours, the user will be charged a fee of about $20 and will then own the helmet, according to the Globe.
