NEW Health Charlestown Set to Open This Fall

NEW Health Charlestown, a federally funded health center that will open this fall in the former St. Catherine’s School at 13 Tufts Street, was recently awarded $647,000 to operate an integrated primary care/behavioral health model at its new site. The Commonwealth’s Executive Office of Health and Human Services (EOHHS) awarded this grant believing that screening for mental health problems during any medical visit will increase the overall health of patients.

NEW Health Charlestown is a subsidiary of North End Waterfront Health (NEW Health), a federally qualified health center in the North End, which is certified as a level 3 Patient Centered Medical Home by the National Center of Quality Assurance and the Joint Commission. This patient-centered model of care will be replicated at NEW Health Charlestown by having a healthcare team of medical providers, nursing, mental health clinicians, dental providers, and optometrists collaborate on the patients’ treatment.

“North End Waterfront Health is proud to extend our comprehensive healthcare services to Charlestown,” says Jim Luisi, CEO of NEW Health. “Studies have proven that crime rates and domestic violence rates decrease when everyone in a community has access to medical care, so by reaching out to an underserviced group we hope to benefit all of Charlestown. Thanks to the EOHHS grant, we are able to take a step forward in providing quality care to even more patients.”
