Fifth Grade Charlestown Students Launch Handmade Boat at Fan Pier

Beautiful weather and a passion for learning brought six fifth grade students from Harvard-Kent Elementary in Charlestown to launch their handmade wooden boat at Fan Pier Marina on Thursday, September 26 showcasing their commitment to Boston Family Boat Building.

The event was the culmination of a Boston Family Boat Building program which combines teaching hands on math, a practical application of geometry and real world experience for low-income area students. Though BFBB’s mission of taking students out of their classroom and offering them opportunities to engage in hands-on learning on Boston’s waterfront, their world becomes bigger and their learning comes alive.

The students were eager and excited to finally enjoy the fruits of their labor when they launched their handcrafted boat into the water. Over the course of nine days, the students spent three hours per day working and applying the necessary skills to build their very own boat, which they named, Escape.

The students took turns taking their handcrafted vessel out to sea, with three kids fitting in the boat at one time – each eager to apply the skills that they had learned come to life as they set sail.
