3 Get Scholarships from Charlestown Partners HealthCare Affiliates

Charlestown residents Bridget Collier, Mather Hoyt, and Sheryl Lubin are the recipients of the 2014 Partners HealthCare Charlestown Merit Scholarship, awarded by Partners affiliates MGH Institute of Health Professions, MGH Charlestown HealthCare Center, and Spaulding Rehabilitation Network.

Collier graduated from Boston Latin School, where she was captain of the girls’ ice hockey and lacrosse teams. She plans to attend the University of Connecticut in the fall where she will pursue a degree in physical therapy.

She has volunteered as a tutor and coach at the Charlestown Lacrosse and Learning Center, and as a camp counselor and group leader for the Charlestown Community Center.

After first becoming interested in physical therapy while at Latin, her focus on the profession increased after seeing how therapists helped her grandfather recovered from a car accident and the work done assisting survivors of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing.

“I feel that I have a really good attitude and approach to helping people achieve their goals,” Collier said, “which will be a key component in becoming a physical therapist.”

Hoyt also graduated from Boston Latin, where he was captain of the sailing team and a writer for the school newspaper. He plans to attend the University of Missouri-Colombia, where he will consider a number of degree options.

He has volunteered for several Charlestown organizations, including the Charlestown Boys & Girls Club, Charlestown Youth Soccer, Harvest on Vine Food Pantry, and the Charlestown Chamber of Commerce.

Hoyt spent time at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital last August, recovering from multiple injuries suffered in a car accident. He lauded the care he received from nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, and physicians at the hospital.

“They pushed me to increase my mobility, to improve my memory, and to get back into my daily routine,” he said. “Their combined work restored my body, my mind, and my spirits. Without their support I would never be myself again.”

Lubin graduated from TechBoston Academy in Dorchester, where she was involved in several school activities including dance and fundraising. She plans to attend the University of Massachusetts Boston, where she plans to pursue a nursing degree and eventually hopes to become a nurse practitioner.

She grew up in Port-au-Prince, Haiti before moving in 2010 to Charlestown, where she has volunteered as a tutor at the Charlestown Boys & Girls Club.

Her aunt owned a hospital in Haiti, and it was after visiting and volunteering there that she resolved to help people by becoming a nurse.

“Seeing how she had a major impact on peoples’ lives made me even more certain about the path I wanted to follow after graduating from high school,” Lubin said.

This is the fifth year the three Charlestown affiliates of Partners HealthCare System have collaborated to award these scholarships. Each student will receive a $2,000 scholarship.
