Homework Help, Jamming Near Sullivan Square and the First Modern Cookbook

• The Charlestown branch of the Belmont Public Library, 179 Main St., is offering free drop-in homework help, academic support and mentoring available in all subject areas to students in grades K to 8.

• Hot Sauce presents Somerville's newest blues, soul and R&B jam on Tuesday's at Casey's Bar, 173 Broadway, Somerville. Sign ups starts at 8 p.m. and everyone is welcome. The location is walking distance from the Sullivan Square stop. 

• Currently in exhibit at the USS Constitution Museum in the Navy Yard, 24 5th St., "In All Hands On Deck: A Sailor's Life in 1812" where you can explore the harsh realities of life at sea and joint USS Constitution just as the War of 1812 is declared. Hands on activities, fascinating personal stories and the birth of a national icon make All Hands On Deck entertaining for visitors from all ages.

• On this day in 1896, the "Fannie Farmer Cookbook", the first to have precise measurements in the recipes, was published in the city where Farmer taught, Boston.
