5. Today is the 75th anniversary of Orson Welles and the CBS Mercury Theatre on the Air performance of their version of H. G. Wells' The War of the Worlds. With the country on edge due to years of economic depression and from the recent "Munich" crisis that nearly brought war to the world, many of the nearly six million around the country who heard the radio play believed that Martians were invading the earth. Word quickly spread and many panicked hearing the "news." If you never have heard the broadcast, treat yourself by going to Youtube for a taste of great radio.
