Join the USS Constitution Museum, the US Postal Service and the Boston National Historical Park for the First-Day-Of-Issue Ceremony for the USS Constitution The War of 1812 Commemorative Stamp.

The stamp features the oldest known painting of the most famous ship of the War of 1812, USS Constitution, and is the first in a series that will be issued by the Postal Service commemorating the bicentennial of a war where the  Ship earned her famous nickname, Old Ironsides, as cannonballs appeared to bounce off Constitution’s thick sides. A national symbol of pride and America’s official “Ship of State,” Old Ironsides will be the guest of honor as Boston gathers in the Navy Yard for this momentous event.

The image selected by the Postal Service for the commemorative stamp is from an early 19th century painting by renowned maritime artist Michele Felice Cornè. The painting will be on view during this event at the USS Constitution Museum. Following the commemoration, USS Constitution Forever® stamps and first day cancellations will be available to the public within the Navy Yard. This event is free and open to the public; all guests visiting the Ship must have a valid ID and are subject to security screening.

During the Stamp Release event on the 18th, and the Anniversary of Old Ironsides on the 19th, the Museum will be setting up tables and inviting visitors to write letters to our soldiers.   The USO will be supplying the Museum with contact info for a unit and while visitors won't be writing to any one solider in particular, they will be encouraged to share their thanks and thoughts.
