Flag Day and the Opening of the NEW "Old Ironsides 1812 Discovery Center"

June 16 - USS Constitution Museum Old Ironsides 1812 Discovery Center Exhibit Opening: Travel back in time and fight for free trade and sailors rights on the high seas! Learn what life was like as a US Navy sailor two hundred years ago at the USS Constitution Museum, where every day the stories of the War of 1812 come to life. On June 16, 2012 join the Constitution Museum and Keith Lockhart, Boston Pops conductor, for a ribbon cutting to open the NEW exhibit, Old Ironsides 1812 Discovery Center. The Discovery Center will teach the causes and consequences of the War of 1812 through the lens of USS Constitution offering hands – on interactive exhibits and programs. Also on June 16 witness a spectacular patriotic display in the Navy Yard. Three 90 x 45 foot flags representing the United States, Great Britain, and Canada will be unfurled as a reminder of the 200 years of peace between the nations that fought during the War of 1812. The giant flags will stretch across the Navy Yard, from the Constitution Museum towards “Old Ironsides” – 12pm

Dedicated to educating Americans about the historic USS Constitution and remembering the Old Ironside stories, the USS Constitution Museum sits on the Charlestown Navy Shipyard right across from the naval vessel. Opened in 1976, the museum receives up to 275,000 visitors annually. Its current exhibits include A Sailor's Life and the Old Ironside in War and Peace, as well as several temporary exhibits. A gift store is located near the entrance and features everything from apple cherry candies to printed T-shirts and caps.
