Gomez, Markey Set For Final Senate Debate

The discussion will air on WCVB Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Another U.S. Senate election for Massachusetts is drawing to a close, with the two combatants set to square off one final time before voters head to the polls June 25. Democratic Congressman Edward Markey of Malden and Republican businessman and former U.S. Navy SEAL Gabriel Gomez will meet up in the last of three debates Tuesday evening in the race to fill the seat formerly held by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry. The debate will air live from 7 to 8 p.m. on WCVB (Channel 5). The debate will be moderated by R.D. Sahl of Boston University. The two previous debates for the candidates were held in Boston and Springfield. Recent polling has suggested an edge for Markey in the race. Both candidates have received visits from high-profile …

Gomez has no public sector experience. We know that. Looks like he has a dismal private sector performance as well , no management positions or skills. Gomez participated in relatively few deals and never earned a promotion to partner. He shifted to a lower marketing role at his firm. Translation , a demotion. A Globe review of Gomez’s nine years at Advent Int’l found that Gomez was directly …   more ›

Politicians on Parade in Charlestown

Candidates for Boston mayor, City Council and U.S. Senate were among those participating in the 2013 Bunker Hill Day Parade on Sunday.

With Boston's mayoral and City Council races heating up, many of the candidates turned out Sunday for Charlestown's Bunker Hill Day Parade, taking advantage of an opportunity to get their faces and names out in the community.

The labor vote of years past does not and has not carried Charlestown for many years. If I were a betting man, with the CMA, elderly and many Townies who are supporting Connolly believe that will pull more vote than the labor allies who do not reside in town anymore.   more ›

Felix Arroyo Launches Official Campaign for Mayor

The city councilor made his official announcement in the South End on Saturday.

City Councilor Felix G. Arroyo officially kicked off his mayoral campaign on Saturday in the South End. Arroyo outlined a series of goals that included improving Boston's public schools, and having safe and affordable neighborhoods. "My family, like many families, needed a leg up and needed affordable housing and that was provided for them right here in Villa Victoria," he said. "Everyone deserves to have a place to live, and that doesn’t happen by accident, and that doesn’t happen because you wish it so. That happens by intention." Arroyo also noted he plans to support small businesses in the city. "Boston has over a billion dollars in deposits in various banks, yet we don’t know that these banks invest at all in any of our neighborhoods…

@Southender I guess you don't get around much. Felix attends a ton of events in the South End and he's a above-average height guy. Secondly, even in your shut-in condition, I guess you didn't see WGBH-TV's interviews with the candidates. He wasn't even in my original consideration set, but he had the quickest mind and best responses in the series. That said I've got four-five candidates I like …   more ›

Markey or Gomez: Who Gets Your Vote?

If the special election was today, who would you choose as our new U.S. senator?

A week from Tuesday, Massachusetts voters will decide who to elect in the special election to fill the seat vacated by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry.  What we at Patch want to know is - if the election was today - who would you vote for? Candidates Democrat Ed Markey and Republican Gabriel Gomez have been pullling out all the stops in the last two weeks as the latest polls show the gap is narrowing between the two.  After weeks of relative quiet, the negative ads have started to clog the airways and both candidates have had high-profile folks stumping for them. Rudy Guiliani was in town last week putting his support behind Gomez and President Obama came to Boston this week showing his support for Markey. So tell us, if you had to vote…

Obama: I Need Ed Markey in Senate

The President appears at a campaign event at Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center in Roxbury.

President Barack Obama made a trip to Boston on Wednesday to stump for Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Edward Markey, as the special election to fill John Kerry's former seat nears. According to White House press pool reports, Obama appeared at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Roxbury and attempted to get a crowd of Markey supporters fired up and ready to go. Obama said "too many folks in Washington are putting the next election ahead of the next generation" but that Markey, a Malden Democratic congressman since 1976, would be part of the process to change that. "I need folks in the Unites States Senate who wake up every day thinking about the folks who sent them there ... I need Ed Markey in the United States Senate," Obama …

Yancey Still in Running for Mayor, City Council

District 4 Boston City Councilor Charles Yancey is keeping his name in both the mayoral and district races.

Longtime Boston City Councilor Charles Yancey plans to remain on the Sept. 24 ballot for both mayor and the District 4 seat he currently holds.  "I'll be on both. I know it’s an unusual move. It may have not been done in recent history in Boston. But it is not unusual on the national level," Yancey told Patch. Yancey said constituents have requested that he remain on both ballots. "I’m asking voters for in District 4 to vote for me as their district councilor and for mayor. And out of District 4, I’m asking for their vote for mayor," he said. District 4 contains Mattapan and Dorchester, and a smart part of Roslindale will be in District 4 in January 2014 because of redistricting. Yancey said he has no plans to withdraw from either race by …

Mayoral Candidates Certified, Raising Funds

District Attorney Dan Conley is the only one running for Boston mayor who has so far raised more than $1 million.

There will be at least 12 candidates on the Sept. 24 ballot for mayor, as Boston's Elections Department continues to certify signatures. One candidate not yet to be certified as of Monday morning is barstoolsports.com owner David Portnoy.  While Portnoy may be more entertainment than a serious candidate to run City Hall, many of the candidates who are expected to garner the most votes have been certified well ahead of the June 25 deadline. District Attorney Dan Conley has the most money in his campaign with more than $1.1 million, according to the Office of Campaign and Political Finance's website.  At-Large City Councilor John Connolly has $564,000 for his campaign, followed by fellow city councilor District 8's Mike Ross with $453,000. …

Markey Up 48-41 on Gomez in New Suffolk Poll

The margin between the two Senate candidates was 52-35 a month ago.

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Gabriel Gomez has narrowed the polling gap with Democratic candidate Edward Markey in a new Suffolk University poll. In a survey of what the university called 500 "tightly-screened" likely voters, Markey has garnered 48 percent of support to Gomez's 41 percent. Ten percent have not yet made up their minds while one percent refused to answer and another one percent are supporting Twelve Visions candidate Richard Heos. “Ed Markey continues to lead but the margin has dwindled,” said David Paleologos, director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center in Boston in a statement along with Monday's poll results. “Markey’s core ballot test number has fallen below 50 percent and recent Obama administration…

The candidates were separated into two groups and answered the same amount of questions with the same time limit. Gomez, Markey Spar in First Senate Debate

Gun control, health care, economy and foreign policy were among the major topics in the first meeting of the two Massachusetts candidates.

Gabriel Gomez and Edward Markey engaged Wednesday in their first debate before the U.S. Senate special election later this month, and the tone was markedly similar to the tone of the overall campaign thus far. Gomez, the Republican Cohasset businessman and former U.S. Navy SEAL, and Markey, the Democratic congressman from Malden who was first elected in 1976, jabbed at each other during the hour-long debate at WBZ-TV's studios. The debate was sponsored by the news station and the Boston Globe. Topics for the evening included gun control, health care, the economy, foreign policy, recent national political scandals, immigration and abortion. Time and again, Gomez pounded Markey for his years in Washington, painting the congressman as out of …
