Neighbors weigh in on the city's plan to redesign Sullivan Square and Rutherford Avenue with a "surface option," which would remove the underpasseses in the neighborhood and create a more pedestrian- and bike-friendly boulevard in Charlestown. The proposal has its share of supporters and detractors. Read more about the plan here. And check back for more voices on the plan throughout the week.
Bike lanes. One day last fall they were here. And a few days later they were gone. City crews installed the lanes before the community could weigh in whether they wanted them -- and, if so, where they should be. So just as quickly, crews removed the lanes until a broader discussion could take place. On May 2, officials from Boston Bikes will be in the neighborhood to host that discussion. Before the meeting, we wanted to hear what you had to say about bike lanes.
This month the Boston Redevelopment Authority will officially start accepting ideas from developers who would like to build on Pier 5 in the Navy Yard. Ultimately it will be up to city officials to decide which proposal to pursue, and the future of the pier, but we want to know what people in Charlestown would like to see there.
Not too long ago, after the snow started to melt, we heard a lot of complaints about local dog owners not cleaning up after their pets well enough in Charlestown. Now that it's fully spring, we're wondering how people are feeling about the issue.
Some city councilors -- including Charlestown's councilor, Sal LaMattina -- have proposed a citywide ban on smoking in public parks and beaches. They've filed for a public hearing on the proposal. Before councilors debate the issue, we asked residents of Charlestown what they thought about a ban on smoking in public spaces.
Although this week's weather forecast might make it hard to believe, spring is officially underway. It's been a long, snowy winter. Patch went around the neighborhood asking folks what part of winter they're happiest to say good-bye to, and what part of spring they can't wait to see. Check back each day this week for a new response.
