Welcome to "You Ask, Patch Answers," a new feature where we find the answers to your questions. This week, we tackled the question, "When's the last day of school for Boston Public Schools students?" According to the most recent snow days through March 21, the last day of school for Boston Public Schools students will be held on June 28. Any further snow days will continue to push school back a day. Got a question about the neighborhood you want answered? Submit it in the comments below.
If you’ve ever planned to use the pathway over the Charles River Dam to get to work and found it closed, this answer is for you. One local reader said last week it seemed like the Charles River Dam Walkway had been closing without any notice lately. “There is considerable grumbling and discontent when people see they are closed and now have to backtrack to the bridge and possibly be late for work,” the reader wrote. “With appropriate advertising we can plan accordingly.” To find out if and why the walkway has been closing unexpectedly, Patch turned to Massachusetts Department of Conservation …
Drivers who are considering a switch to electric vehicles or current vehicle owners looking for a place nearby to charge their rides have a couple of places to find their outlet. In Charlestown, the closest charging stations are in Cambridge at the Traffic Department's First Street location and the Cambridgeside Galleria, according to crowd-sourced website carstations.com. Carstations allows users to upload new car charging locations to a Google map and (when applicable) provides details on the station. According to the site's About section, "This website is designed to encourage …
Currently, Charlestown is sandwiched between two bridges that are in varying stages of reconstruction—the Alford Street/Route 99 bridge to the north, heading into Everett, and the North Washington Street bridge to the south, heading into Boston’s North End. Both appear to be under construction, but to those who pass over the bridges daily it may be unclear exactly what work is being done. So what is the actual status of the two projects? For the answer, Patch turned to Para Jayasinghe, city engineer for the Boston Public Works Department. Both bridges are owned by the City of Boston, but …
You know the old saying "Fall back, spring forward." Well, it's almost time to spring forward. This year we move the clocks overnight on Sunday, March 10. Don't forget to move your clocks ahead one hour before going to bed Saturday night. Officially, Daylight Saving starts at 2 a.m. on Sunday. Yes, moving the clocks ahead does mean we all lose an hour of sleep, but in return it will be light later in the day. Besides, the lost hour falls on Saturday night, so just sleep in a bit on Sunday before getting up and starting the day with your Patch Newsletter. Do you have a question you want …
Several Charlestown readers have expressed frustration over even tighter parking around town after the Feb. 8-9 blizzard dropped more than two feet of snow on Boston. When the city lifted the snow emergency and parking ban on Tuesday, Feb. 12, it meant residents who had been parking in temporary free or low-cost lots, like MGH's Building 199 in the Navy Yard, had to fight for spots on the street amid huge piles of leftover snow. For many, the solution was to shovel out a spot on the street and leave a chair or traffic cone to "save" that spot until things cleared up. Today, two weeks after …
In a new feature on Charlestown Patch called “You Ask … Patch Answers,” readers are invited to ask questions about anything they see or hear about in town and want to know more about. Already, we’ve received a few questions from the community regarding the status of vacant buildings, ongoing construction projects and other items. This week, we turn an eye on 75 West School St. Several people have asked what is being constructed on the site of the former Knights of Columbus hall (which is now located on Medford Street). For the answer, Patch turned to Mark Rosenshein, chairman of the …
