Tips on how to foster personal health and wellness, right in the neighborhood.
I love Whole Foods. No really, I do. When I go in to that store, I'm mesmerized. It starts with the produce section and a feeling like I'm walking into a farm stand in rural Vermont or the north shore of Massachusetts. Everything looks so beautiful and healthy. It continues as I walk through the aisles, graze in the cheese and bread section, pick up a few things in the bakery, make some cool tea selections and then -- only then -- do I grab a to-go container and make my way through the prepared foods section. I always go for the broccoli rabe and the squash, two things I love but hate to make…
I like to think of myself as a master multi-tasker. On days when I'm really busy, I can eat, talk on the phone and be reading through emails at the same time. The other day, in my zest for "getting it all done" I sat at Papa Gino's and ate -- or I should say, inhaled -- a slice of pizza while talking on the phone. Needless to say, I ended up with quite a stomach ache, which was no reflection on the quality of the food I ate. When we think of "yoga," we typically think of doing poses. This is correct because that's what yoga is; a system of breathing and moving on a yoga mat. But underneath …
I don't like riding the subway. It's a general feeling of being out of control, being with strangers, having to wait to get where I'm going and not being sure I'm going to get there on time. But recently, I had a shift in my schedule and it makes no sense for me to drive. So, I walked to the Community College stop and got on the train. It took time for me to figure out how to get where I was going and to know which stop to use for departure. It took a bit of coordination to use the new kiosk system to buy a ticket. I had to switch trains, so there was a bit of confusion as I got off the one …
As a yoga teacher and health and wellness resource, I thought for my second column I'd continue on the theme from my first, "Creating Mindfulness in Your Own Backyard." A huge part of what it means to me to be healthy, is to integrate health throughout my whole day. Once I start to separate things, like "Now I'm going to go work out" or "Now, I'm going to eat healthy," I start to feel like I'm living different lives throughout my day. The word "yoga" means "to yoke or join" and that concept is a great one to create a foundation of health in your life. How do we do this? I'm often hit with the…
Welcome to the first installment of the weekly column about health and wellness. It seems like a good place to start is by explaining the name Under Our Feet.As a yoga teacher, yoga is a huge part of my life and teaching is one of my greatest joys. In yoga, we put into action the idea of standing firm in our feet and if it's a pose where we're not on the feet, we create a firm foundation through whatever is touching the ground. Once we feel solid in our foundation, we feel strong and connected and once we feel connected, it's a great way to feel healthy overall. It's also an effective way to …
