Whole Foods To Offer Free Charlestown Shuttle
The complimentary Thursday and Saturday service will begin Nov. 21.
While Charlestown residents have been busy working on ways to get their neighbors to a grocery store once Johnnie’s Foodmaster closes on Nov. 19, the company taking over the Thompson Square store has put together its own solution to the problem.
Whole Foods Market, which in late October confirmed its purchase of six Foodmaster stores in the Boston area, sent out a press release Friday announcing a new complimentary shuttle service for residents in the Charlestown and North End communities.
“The complimentary shuttle will take shoppers to the closest open Whole Foods Market location, in Beacon Hill, while its Charlestown store is undergoing renovations,” the press release stated. “Whole Foods Market has arranged this free shuttle service from Bunker Hill Mall and three North End locations, to the Charles River Plaza store, twice weekly.”
The Whole Foods shuttle will begin running on Wednesday, Nov. 21—the day before Thanksgiving—and again on Saturday, Nov. 24. After that, a regular schedule will start up, with three trips offered on Thursdays and two on Saturdays.
Each trip will run 90 minutes, including about half an hour of roundtrip travel time and an hour for shopping, according to the press release.
The Thompson Square store will be closing for renovations next week and is set to reopen sometime in 2013.
Below is a the complete schedule for Wednesday, Nov. 21 and Thursdays and Saturdays thereafter:

Nice. So far so good. I don't think its fair to expect them to take people to a competitor, so this is a very nice gesture.

Kudos to Whole Foods for offering this service. It's clear they are aware of the community's concern and want to play an active role in supporting the area they will be servicing in the years to come. Change can be difficult sometimes, but keeping an open mind and giving the 'new guy' a chance can be helpful through this transition.

Well done. Now it would be nice to see Whole Foods charging a little less for staples when they open. I shop at Market Basket-but I like Whole Foods' food-it's just ridiculously expensive for a lot of item. Thanksgiving for instance would be almost twice as much as most competitors. I actually perceived Johnny's to be high in price, I hope (for other families as much as my own) that WF can find a balance and not be just a place for the yuppies.

Are we going to get into this absolutely insulting "yuppie" thing again?

I love Whole Foods and it's higher priced, BETTER quality meat, fish, produce, dairy and pantry foods.

Further, this is a wonderful gesture and will help locals familiarize themselves with the store and determine what isn't cost prohibitive.

Agreed - good "Public Relations move " on the part of while foods. And yes Johnnies was overpriced as it was but it had so
E good salesbon meats sometimes and it was ok for the staple stuff. While foods is even more expensive. We all know that.....its done ....cant cry now ....i have always shopped at market basket all the way - either locational Somerville location saves so much money!!!
Lol on the yuppie anger ...... Don't get your golf shirt in a ruffle .......HA

This is. Ether than the Romney vs Obama arguments .....!!!!
Sad part is still the low income and elderly residents who will suffer in this move .....hope that higher quality meat is very filling cuz there only gonna be able to buy a small amount

Let's face it ......C-town is no longer a "Working class neighborhood"
It is now an upper middle class city enclave with a large public housing and elder housing set up.
It is what it is.........

In a perfect world we could all eat our organic hand massaged chicken with a nice glass of organic chianti and finish it with some local organic ice cream then climb into our Cadillacs and hit the BSO for a night of melodic revery.
But, unfortunately a lot of us are meatloaf and mashed potatoes people ...... Accompanied by the radio.. ..

You can make meatloaf and mashed potatoes out of ingredients from Whole Foods. Once again we run into the myth that Whole Foods has nothing that we can find in Johnnies. And everything in the meal you listed sounds awesome except for the Cadillac.

This is a fine gesture by Whole Foods on behalf of the Charlestown community, but how are folks who are on a limited income going to get to less expensive grocery stores?

This silly nonsense about Whole Foods being SO MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE OMG than everything else can be resolved by some simple google searching.

Need a Federal Subsidy to afford Whole Foods and I'm NOT talking about EBT, more like The Reinvestment Act.
