What People Are Talking About: The Teens on Main Street

The owner of Durty Harry's is asking the community for help. She says a group of teenagers are deterring customers from coming into her Main Street shop.

Today is Thursday, Oct. 13. Here are five things you need to know today.

1. What are people talking about? The teenagers hanging on out on Main Street -- again. This week Michelle, the owner of Durty Harry's has put out a call to the action. She says the kids on Main Street are getting in the way of her business and she wants help. There's been quite a conversation on this already. Check out her letter and weigh in.

2. Want to learn more about the candidates for the at-large city council seats? Our friends at Charlestown Live will be talking with them over the next couple of weeks, starting with tonight's program. We've got a schedule for the guests and more details here

3. Save the date: Stiggy's Dog, a very cool nonprofit, will be having a fundraiser at the Knights on Nov. 5. Stiggy's Dogs helps returning vets with PTSD -- by helping them connect with therapeutic dogs.

4. Remember how local kids beat police in a basketball match? Well, the BPD wants to try for a victory again. They'll play Charlestown kids on Oct. 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the Community Center

5. Today's forecast: More rain predicted, mostly before 1 p.m. High around 67. Chance of rain, 90 percent.

For more info on what's happening around the neighborhood, check out our events calendar. And please, feel free to post your own!

That doesn't look like durty Harrys to me. Want to know why? Because it's not we stand to the left of Doyles not the right. And how the hell is a dog groomer doing good for the town? Want to do good for the town? Make us new roller hockey courts and basketball courts and maybe well have places to go and the cops will stop harassing us.

Hey Matty - Would you be able to provide some details as to what exactly is needed for the roller hockey and basketball courts? How about putting together an email of these details and submitting it to The Patch - maybe Kristi could post it? I believe this could be a great way to start raising some funds to make this happen.

I have expressed my lack of confidence in the CNC, but isn’t their role to better the community as a whole? I don’t see why they can’t allocate some their resources ($$$) to these courts and help rebuild them. Wouldn’t you all agree? Say, take $50 or $75 off of all the organizations they currently fund and start a new program to help rebuild these courts – sounds like a positive, forward thinking idea to me.

This is the FIRST time I've heard any of these teenagers asking for something from the town, especially on this website. Who knows, maybe Matty’s post could be the solution to why these teenagers are bored and have nothing to do.

Ryan Mo ...Seriously the guy Joe I think its the same guy i have gone back and fourth with before so i am surprised by his willingness to offer help....he must be coming over to the dark side,,,,HA HA .....but he is on your side...Maybe you didn't read his posting correctly ...maybe instead of spending so much time in front of doyle's pick a book up ,could help with the spelling and reading...Not a slam just a suggestion...You guys have posted many times Why dont they ask us what we want/need why dont they show us respect...We'll that's what Joseph was doing he was suggesting you put a proposal together and submit it, that is how things get done. you know you cant just jump on people when they are trying to help and then ask why dont they give us respect why dont they ask us what we want when you keep attacking everyone...Re reading my post I could do some more reading also as my writing could use some polishing also

Ryan Mo - I think you may have been confused by my post. Matty mentioned that the courts and roller hockey rink were in need of much needed repair. I asked that he put together a list of what is needed and submit it to The Patch for Kristi to post. An open letter from the teenagers of Charlestown. This will make the community see what is needed to help give you teenagers something to do. I’ve always said, "Why not start a pickup game of sorts?" Matty just shed some light on why that isn't as easy as I assumed.

John - The dark side always wins. HA. But seriously, Matty's post was the first time I heard one of these teenagers actually tell us what they want. They are telling us, so I'll be the first to say I want to hear. I’m not as closed minded as I may come across.

I call for the CNC to pledge $500 to help fix up these two locations. That would be less than $50 from each organization they already allocate funds to. I don’t think these organizations would have a problem donating $50 to help the kids of this town, right?

I am pretty sure the hockey court and basketball court down at Eden St. are in fine, working order. They had tournaments there a couple months ago. No improvements needed. Use those to play some pick up games.
