Visions for Vacancy: Domino's on Main Street?

Would you like to see a Domino’s Pizza on Main Street?

That’s what could be headed our way. Bill Mohan, a consultant for a local Domino’s franchise, told Charlestown Patch this week that he has been in talks with the realtor for 277 Main Street to potentially install a store there.

In a statement, the Charlestown Chamber of Commerce said it objects to a Domino’s making its home so close to Toni Ann’s Pizza, but Mohan said that “this isn’t Domino’s national conglomerate that’s coming into town.”

“We’ve been delivering in Charlestown for 20 years,” Mohan said.

Charlestown lacks late-night food options, Mohan said. He also said he didn’t believe that a Domino’s would compete with local stores and added the location would employ 18-20 people.

Mohan couldn’t say when the store would potentially open.

“It’s very early in the process,” he said. He added that he will appear before the Charlestown Neighborhood Council on Tuesday.

This is NOT what we need. I hope the CNC engages the neighborhood in a dialogue about this sober can express our concerns if it moves further.

Domino's would be a bad fit since we already have 6 or 7 other places that serve pizza to our square mile neighborhood.... plus Domino's pizza is awful.

All Domino's promises is that they'll deliver it hot, not that it'll taste good! I'll stick with Toni Anns!

Two things:
1. I'm amused by the image of someone wearing a mask to hide their identity while typing anonymously from a computer in their home or workplace.
2. I'm not sure that one needs anonymity while impugning the product quality of a company that openly admitted during an advertising campaign that their quality hasn't always been top-notch.

Toni Ann's is locally owned & operated, is Dominos locally owned and operated I highly doubt it, besides we already have Papa Gino's which has been a fixture since The Mall opened.

NO! We do not need, nor want, Domino's in Charlestown. We have ToniAnn's, Jenny's, Figs and Papa Gino's. It would compare to opening another nail or hair dressing salon. We don't need, not want, any more of them, either.

Domino's is not very good pizza. How about a kids clothing store?

We had the Red Wagon for a while on the Training Field. It did very well but she moved to Charles Street for better exposure. With all the kids in this town, it might be time for another kids store.

Good one, Betty! Our cousin, Suzy O'Brien, had that store and she moved for more space and an opportunity to branch out to 'tweens' size, You are always a good measure.

That will always be the address to the Wizard Ice Cream Store---just curious if the old bank vaults which were transformed into flash freezers are still on the premises?????

What building are you referring to?

Competition is good. Toni Ann's is medico. Why not put another nail salon in? Or another dog salon? In all honesty the land lord would be liuckey to get a tenant with all the hooligans that hang in this area.

Would prefer to have something NEW in Charlestown rather than just another pizza joint

Absolutely not! Domino's has an inferior product and drivers that pose a safety issue for pedestrians and cars in Charlestown.

I agree that Charlestown lacks late night food options .. But Domino's is gross and I don't want that here. What this town needs is:
1) A cheesburger/fries/shake joint/diner type of place, would be awesome if it would stay open til 1/2 am on the weekends.
2) A bakery (and not some fancy/yuppie one either - just a regular Ma & Pa Bakery .. Would be AWESOME if they made home made donuts)
3) An Ice cream parlor because Emack & Bolio's sucks and is expensive
4) Another bar because all the bars around here are packed on the weekends

How about a Boloco, JP Licks, or sushi place? I'd be very happy to see any of those open up on Main St.

Lord: Paolo's, Toni Anne's, Jenny's, .....I believe all are owned by Ctown residents; and they support local youth organizations, and then some. C'mon now, Charlestown; step up for the businesses that are neighborhood owned.

Sean, it all starts with an ironclad business plan. A great place to start is here: www.sba.gov or http://www.sba.gov/sba-direct/02129/local-resources/

There's a lot to know and learn.

Opening a Domino's Pizza here would be like opening another nail salon!! We don't need it. If they've been delivering here for 20 years, then let them keep delivering for another 20. Just don't take up space here with a storefront.

Agree-no Domino's! What a major disappointment that would be. Any of the many ideas suggested above would be far better! Mexican, sushi, burritos, burgers, a good deli, prepared foods to go, etc.

Do the people who make the decisions about what ends up in these vacant properties actually read these comments? Is there a way we can have a local vote on this or something? I know it probably won't happen...but really? A Domino's? I'm probably one of the few who actually eats Dominos and likes it, but I definitely don't want them taking up a storefront on Main st.

I second all the comments Debbie and others made.... mexican, sushi, any place that allows for people to go, sit down and eat.... or take away something delicious....

i'm not slamming Dominoes, because i have had it delivered, and it is available to Charlestown people via delivery if you want it. I don't want to see another nail salon or beauty salon, pizza place or realtor office, because we really do have enough, but the question is....if the owner of the vacant storefront has a willing tenant...is there really anything we can do about it? If it's been vacant and no other "takers" have shown interest i don't know how we can expect someone to "hold off" until something WE like shows an interest in renting. I honestly wish someone local could make a go of something else here. I would even like to see a consignment store or something like that. It doesn't necessarily have to be a restaurant. But again that is a decision that the owner will make in the end. Let's hope they get other offers soon...so they can have a choice.

A consignment store would be great! It would also bring in people from other neighborhoods.

What does the community think about a higher end boutique store? Does anyone know if there has ever been one in Charlestown?

Yes there used to be a few on Main St.
The Grey Shoppe
Austins
And also two men's clothing stores
but unfortunately they were turned condo's
There also was two furniture stores
A butter and egg store,a meat outlet, and also two shoe stores, I could continue but I realize that probably was well before you lived here!
Not to be rude.
