Video: Does Charlestown Have a Dog Poop Problem?
For this week's person-on-the-street perspective, we asked folks how they felt about the amount of dog poop showing up on sidewalks.
Not too long ago, after the snow started to melt, we heard a lot of complaints about local dog owners not cleaning up after their pets well enough in Charlestown. Now that it's fully spring, we're wondering how people are feeling about the issue.

This is a huge issue in town and its sad because this is such an amazing neighborhood to live in and there are of course many responsible dog owners too, but the bad ones ruin it for all! I love kids and dogs and parents and dog owners must be held equally responsible.

I love how dog friendly Charlestown is but yes these dogs are well fed and are not picked up after. I actually saw a plastic bag on the ground on Main Street and went to throw it out when I saw it had dog poop in it! The owner was half way there with picking it up in a bag but the 2nd half of throwing it out did not happen! Yuck!

I completely agree with the man in the video. All the poop is disgusting! As a dog owner, I'm embarrassed to be potentially viewed as being disrespectful to the beauty of our town. Just as I wouldn't let my kids litter or paint graffiti, I would also never leave dog poop on the ground. Shame on those owners who give the rest of us a bad name.

My husband cleans the area outside our home reguarly. For about the last year and a half someone has been dropping grey bags of dog poop in the area around the trees and in our neighbor's recycling bin. Our neighbors have been on the look out for the "poop dropper." My husband was agast at the amount of the poop in the bags and he was on he look out for a big dog. Well the culpret was caught! It was a paid dog walker at a well know business in Charlestown. The owner was informed and it has stopped. It really is shameful that these employees would be so disrespectful. Another thing that we found out was the dog walker often ties dogs to a light pole while she retrieves dogs. I worry that one of these dogs will get away and get struck by a car on busy Bunker Hill Street.

a big issue in our neighborhood - the real problem is the disrespectful dog owners. We try to keep our property looking nice - by spreading new mulch each spring, and planting flowers/shrubs. Without fail - these dog owners let their dogs walk all over the mulch and flowers - and allow them to do their duty and not clean it up. It amazes me. We have even gone so far as to confront owners when we see it happening (somehow we end up being the bad guy) as well as putting up signs asking to "keep dogs off". We have lost 2 shrubs so far to dog urine... and continue to clean up dog feces on the mulch and sidewalk. If your going to own a dog - be responsible. You wouldn't let your kid poop on someones property would you?
And by the way - we love dogs.. so it's not as if we are against them.... it's the owners that need to smarten up!

This has been a long term problem and by that I mean decades. The leash law changed everything since we had dogs running loose for years. We have a tree in front of our house and it is a stopping place for dogs of all types. Most people clean up and only a few do not. I have found you have to watch where you step when you walk. That is a constant. On Warren Street I recently noticed a pile from an unusually large dog, I still cannot understand how a dog owner can do that? Today people leave their dog feces in bags in front of people's homes, that is something new and I do not understand that either.

Every try and get doggie weewee out of a granite step? I've come out of my house to see a huge doggie using my steps as his loo while his clueless owner tells me to 'have a nice day' as she lovingly waits for her dog to finish his business. I'm with my dear friend and neighbor, Larry; what's up with the dog bags? When I take my OWN dog for a walk, complete with my little bag for a little dog, I am embarrassed by the numbers of doggie bags (the bad kind) stuffed into the rubbish in front of our beautiful Monument. God Bless the National Park Service for dealing with THAT!

On the most part its' the big dogs poop I find littering the sidewalks. Helping your dog pick the right spot is also important! No one wants to walk into a pile exiting there front doors nor smell the pee either.
I think it's the owners who don't have a means to store the waste until trash day or don't buy flushable bags (hard to find here in Boston).
People with smaller dogs seem better in picking up after their charges.
If you walk around the monument often you'll find the waste cans overflowing with doggy bags. Maybe we need more waste cans around town and put up some bag stations as well.

Ok people...I have two dogs and one of them no matter what I do...will go anywhere he wants when he has to go...I always pick it up whether or not its on the side walk or your favorite bush...but perhaps you should try holding your bladder or bowels whenever you have to go in order to find the right "place".

I have two dogs and I've trained them both to poop on command (each a different command), so it can be done. It did take some work and they won't go on a dime (never expected that), but they will drop their load within a few minutes of me telling them to go. Peeing is harder as they do it to mark their space as well. All I do is pull on their leash when I see them going on someones doorway.
No one is expecting perfection here, What is expected is taking the time to bend over with a bag and pickup after your dog and aiming him way from the doorways. As long as your doing this your doing your part - Thanks!
This winter was much better than last year. I didn't see as much left on the sidewalks as years past. I suspect the lack of snow played a big part (people can't hide things in the snow).
We still have a problem around the monument in 'No mans land' the sidewalk around the square is still not posted and well littered. As the city can't post any signs and the Park service won't as well as they think the signs they now have at the entrances on the Iron fence have it covered. To bad the people on the sidewalks don't see the signs nor do they equate it as having any weight outside of the park proper.

Can't really do that any more, In the past a street sweeper would come by every day in the city. Now were lucky to get them to come by every other week. Times were different then as well as there were just much fewer cars and dogs to deal with.
Today the amount of poop that does manage to go down the storm drains creates a very large health problem just after a rain storm. Haven't you noted the amount of beaches closed do to fecal pollution.
I've seen a few people push their poop bags thru the grates of a storm drain as they don't want to carry it home. They forget between the plastic bag and whats in it creates a big problem in our waterways and our oceans.
Please don't curb or push down the storm drains your dogs waste! Instead use bio-degadable bags and depose of the waste either down the toilet (smaller loads) or put it out with the trash on trash day (unless you have a public waste can to use).
