Teamsters' Parking Draws Sharp Responses
Facebook follower tells complainer to "get a life."
Charlestown Patch’s social media followers had a sharp response Monday to a link we posted to a post about motorcycles parked outside the Teamsters Local 25 building in Sullivan Square.
A user at citizens connect posted this complaint:
“Every time the Teamsters meet they park their bikes there and they are NEVER ticketed. If an ordinary citizen parked their bike there try would be towed They also park their cars in the Sullivan Circle rotary and, again, are never ticketed. Why is this allowed to happen?”
Our Facebook followers took offense to the complaint.
“It's once a month for 9 months out of the year on Sundays. People need to get lives,” said Mary Beth Emerson Lovejoy.
“This must be the YUPPIES complaining. Do we complain when they let their dogs [defecate] all over the place or when they park 3 ft. Away from the curb on narrow side streets?” added Jeff Connors.
But twitter follower Garry Waldeck clarified his complaint:
“It was when they left that was a problem. Not that they were parked illegally,” Waldeck said.
He said that the Teamsters left the gathering around noon. As he was coming around the rotary, Waldeck said, he found people getting into their cars where there is usually space for vehicles to merge.
He also noted that the group could have parked in the empty parking lot adjacent to the building.
What do you think?

"Parked Illegally." End of the story. Cops do nothing about this. CNC refuses to address this and there's even a Boston cop on the committee!! Different rules for different people.

I have lived in Charlestown my whole life and this has been going on as long as I can remember. Why all of a sudden is it a problem? This is no different than the people who complain about the Constitution firing it's cannons at dusk or St. Francis' bells ringing every hour. It's dumb. Try focusing your energy on something real like the attacks on Main Street and near community college.

There is a tremendous difference Mary Beth: Neither the Constitution or the churches are breaking any laws. Just because something has been going on "forever" doesn't make it right. Are there bigger issues? Sure there are, but I find it strange that people would continue to defend people clearly scoffing at parking laws (or any laws for that matter).

How do the busses negotiate those motorcycles? Has anyone who uses that bus stop or lives near it seen how (or if) busses and bus riders are able to adapt to the bikes?

You're right John, there is a joke coming, and it's you. The fact that this is your sense of community has me in stitches. You are that closed minded to see this doesn't affect one person, but it has a major affect upon all those traveling in the rotary, clogging up traffic and reducing the amount of travel lanes? THAT is the problem with them parking there. I just don't get how they can get away with it? How can a cop drive past that and not ticket them? I see your point of view now though, anything against the system is good. Anything with the system is bad. Different rules for different people. Another perfect example of what is wrong with the City of Boston and with those running it.

I have never seen traffic clogged at the rotary, ever, due to Teamsters parking. Perhpas we should curtail the blood drives/autism drives/Toys for Tots drives/union meetings as to not offend the people who take issue with Local 25; on this website, that amounts to two people out of a community of 15,000.

My guess Kevin, you're inside at the meeting and then choose not to see the mess created when you walk outside? Good for them, raising the money they do - that doesn't mean they can do whatever they want when it comes to parking in "NO PARKING ZONES!! I love how you people justify their actions. You're all on the take!!
That's funny Seamus. How true, but I'm not leaving. I've been here for over 15yrs and will be for another 15...at least!! Toonie For Life Baby!!

Joseph, haven't you learned from all these years living in Charlestown? That's the way things have always been so that's the way things will continue to be. Just like kids loitering in front of stores, or the open use/dealing of heroin, cars getting broken into and the police doing nothing about it, etc.. Deal with it or leave. We hate change around here. You wouldn't understand, you're not from here.

What's funny is that is the same attitude people had where I grew up in South Philly when more money started to come through the area. People would whine all day about the crime, gangs, and drugs. Then when people who didn't pimp, sell dope, or beat people for a living started to buy property there (thus raising property values), everyone started crying about that. People boggle my mind. Do they want a nice neighborhood or a dump?

What about the people who park on the sidewalk in front of the courthouse and the Life Focus Center in City Square? Illegal???

Some notes:
1) Enforcement or parking laws is lax everywhere in the city on Sundays since BTD does not work. This is not just a Charlestown or Teamsters issue.
2) If the Teamsters supposedly have so much clout with the city, why don’t they just get BTD to change all the signs to exclude Sundays?
3) The Teamsters do, however, park their black sedans on the city of boston sidewalk in front of the building, most days. This is plain arrogant. If anyone else did the same they would get a ticket. This needs to stop.
4) The pendulum has swung on corruption. The police aren’t going to be able to “look the other way” anymore on illegal parking like this. Citizens are demanding honestly, transparency, and action from their government.

HA ha ha that was so funny I almost peed my pants! "Honesty, transparency, and action from their government". While I am sure you meant to be serious, as long as there is such thing as a liberal, (you know, do as we say and not as we do) and the nimrods in MA keep voting simply because there is a "D" next to their name, you may as well be looking for the holy grail. We were supposed to have that from Odumbo and look where that got us...case closed.

This is a non-issue people. Most if not all of our most influential Massachusetts politicians, national advisors and invited guests, as well as celebrity influences are all frequent visitors of these monthly meetings. Our parking conditions, confinements and restrictions are transparent. We park to simply park and attend our monthly meeting(s), with no other intent or disregard.

These TOONIES have nothing better to do.
Most of them are trust fund babies, they come to Charlestown buy a new toy (real estate) with Mommy and Daddies money stay here for a couple of years and make everybody around them miserable, then they hit the road with their small profit and back to suburbia. TOONIES have been stirring things up since they've infested the Boston neighborhoods, over in the North End every summer you read in the papers about how upset these TOONIE frauds are because of the feast and the smell of the sausages.
LEAVE THE TEAMSTERS ALONE, otherwise go back to Weston or Newton or wherever you frauds are from.

Mudder, I've lived in Charlestown for about 11 years now and have no issues with the Teamsters parking in Sullivan Square periodically on Sundays. I've never seen issues with the traffic. If anything, it helps slow traffic down a little which I think is beneficial. It would be nice if we could get to know people individually and limit stereotypes. I make it a point never to use the words "Townie" or "Toonie" when describing people because I think we all need to appreciate people for what they bring to the table and be accepting of any differences.

Mudder, if toonies are frauds, what is this exactly:
CASHMAN pled guilty to a two-count superseding information charging him with Hobbs Act extortion; and conspiracy to steal and embezzle from an employee benefit program, to file false documents with ERISA, to commit mail fraud and to violate the Taft- Hartley Act

Mudder, you saying all of us non-townies are trust fund babies is like me saying that all townies are loitering uneducated heroin addicts that break into cars and destroy store fronts. It's not really an effective foundation for an argument. In fact, there's probably less difference between you and I than you think. I grew up as the son of a union laborer and a secretary who scraped together what they had to send me to a good college. I earned every single dollar I have through my own hard work. There's nothing fraudulent about that. Sounds to me like you've got some jealousy issues bro.

Yeah, damn those "toonies" who helped turn this city around over the past twenty or so years. rampant crime, slums, and drug epidemics were way better. And no, a "trust fund baby" is not writing this. An eleven year Coast Guardsman and prowd Charlestown resident is (but if the military started paying us on the same level as the "trust fund babies", let me know. Because I must be missing something).

A woman jumped off a bridge and killed herself, people are starving and loosing their houses. Families are living in cars, and Illegals are running people over and or killing them and getting away with it, and we have a poor excuse for a president who is spending our great grandchildren's money as we speak, and spent a quarter of a million dollars to send his daughter and friends to Mexico for spring break.Yet you people are worried about how the Teamsters park their Motorcycles and cars? Really? You ought to be ashamed of yourselves seriously! Don't worry your ugly PRIUSES will still get around them unfortunately.

Poor Mudder. He/she doesn't even know what they're ranting about. Just an angry soul lashing out at anyone and everything. What part of my reply to you was hard to understand? What part of 11 year active duty Coast Guardsman living in Charlestown (enlisted, to boot) also says "trust fund baby"? That all you got? Just blind anger at what you percieve (wrongly) to be at issue?
