Foodmaster Prices Cheaper Than Whole Foods Prices
We price tested seven supermarkets in the eight Boston neighborhoods Patch serves. The result? Trader Joe's is cheapest (though you won't find rotisserie chicken there.)
Supermarkets — they're big news in Boston. Last year's controversy in JP when a Whole Foods replaced a Latino market led to arrests. This year, Charlestown is embroiled in a debate about Whole Foods taking over Johnnie's Foodmaster.
At the heart of these discussions is whether we, as Bostonians, will have access to affordable food.
To test prices, the Boston Patch editors each went out to various supermarkets in our respective neighborhoods on Thursday, Sept. 6. Here's our shopping list:
- MacIntosh Apples (price per pound)
- Bananas (price per pound)
- Zucchini (price per pound)
- Corn (price per pound)
- 2% Milk (gallon)
- Large eggs (dozen)
- Whole rotisserie chicken
- Box of cereal
- Can of chicken noodle soup
- White bread (loaf)
- Toilet paper (six pack)
In some cases, prices had to be approximated due to some stores not carrying a specific item (in the case of Macintosh apples) or because some stores sold certain goods by the pound while other sold it by the piece.
To keep it apples-to-apples, we sought ought the cheapest available option in each store. So, yes, that excludes some of the higher-end, higher-quality organic products.
Here is the list of the supermarkets, from costliest to cheapest. Please note we had to exclude the whole rotisserie chicken because it isn't sold at Trader Joe's. If you include that item, Whole Foods becomes the most expensive store:
- Foodie’s, South End — $24.84
- Whole Foods, Cambridge Street, West End — $24.05
- Roche Brothers, West Roxbury — $23.64
- Stop n' Shop, JP — $21.76
- Johnnie's, Charlestown — $20.79
- Shaw's Landmark Center, Fenway — $20.61
- Trader Joe's, Back Bay — $18.06

Thank you for this! So, hypothetically, for every $100 spent, one would have to spend an extra $16 to eat food that is far better and for perishables that won't rot in two days. Worth every penny. Bring on Whole Foods!

How about if you are on food stamps or WIC????? Ever thought about that in the context of WF?????
Toonie

LBB, I am going to go ahead and assume that was a sarcastic question. If it wasn't, then I am still laughing. It is that very thought process and sense of entitlement that plagues this country. Those with foodstamps/WIC receive assistance from the government and now they feel their community should bring them the right grocery store? Sounds like a good deal for them!! How about the folks that pay the ridiculous amount of taxes each year so that Foodstampd/WIC exist get to shop for fresh food in their own neighborhood and those that are using the WIC/Foodstamps go find a store that accepts them.

Toonie,
Honest question: do you feel that the poor are a burden? Do you roll your eyes anytime they dare speak out of turn or ask for anything?
Toonie
11:38 pm on Saturday, September 15, 2012
@Owen C - Not at all, but I did roll my eyes at your condescending question. In my opinion, there are enough handouts these days and decisions shouldn't be made solely on the accomodation of people that are on WIC/Food Stamps. The market will drive the appropriate business that should be brought to a neighborhood/community.
Owen

Toonie,
There was no condescension. I was responding to the tone of several of your posts regarding the financially disadvantaged. What's interesting is that I haven't read a single post on here from a "hand out" recipient complaining that the decision on the proper grocery store for Charlestown. Those complaints have come from people who presumably just don't want Johnnies to leave.
I don't classify what the financially disadvantaged receive as "hand outs" because I have never walked a mile in their shoes and can't imagined what it is like to have to survive off of government subsidies.

Preach on, Owen. You're in the Coast Guard (thank you for your service, btw) and you're not a "yuppie" - we get it. I was simply responding directly to LBBs post about the consideration of those that are on Food Stamps or WIC by stating that I don't believe that considerations should drive any sort of decision one way or another. Whole Foods is a successful corporation that sees something in the locations their targeting. Simple as that.
And...."walk a mile in their shoes"....what are you, the lead singer of Everlast or something?

It's a sample cross-section of items one would buy. Is that really your gripe with this? Get a grip, pal. All this does is prove that Whole Foods would be a far better option for Charlestown. Nothing more to see here.

9:56 am on Wednesday, September 12, 2012
It's a list size that favors Johnnie's. If you buy fruit, vegetables, and meat at Johnnie's - two days is all you can hope to get out of it. Also, my wife calls Johnnie's the 4$ store. She says it seems like every vegetable she puts in the basket ends up costing 4 bucks. That's not shown here obviously, but she says it happens all the time.
Having said that, I suspect if you compared two different lists, where a person was trying to be frugal and buy sale items in the real food category (fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, bread, eggs, milk, etc.), that list would also come out really close in price. The major difference being that the Whole Foods purchase would actually last you the week.

I am so very worried about the elderly and fixed income families, Most of them can't choose where to shop and rely on cheaper pricing. They are not worrying about better quality they are just trying to survive week to week......
Toonie
10:33 am on Wednesday, September 12, 2012
Miller, the price difference is minimal. While I understand the concern for the elderly, I am sure there will be programs that can help them out. WF's is good like that. As for the fixed income families...not sure why the larger masses need to accomodate them. The government does a good job of that already.
Miller
11:28 am on Wednesday, September 12, 2012
If WF's has programs that help out the elderly I would love to hear about them? I was not aware, and would love to spread the word. People are on fixed incomes for many different reasons...although the government helps, I know people who are receiving assistance and the amount they receive wouldn't feed my cats. I am very fortunate not be in this situation and can drive wherever I please to do my shopping, unfortunately this is not true for everyone.

Miller,
Should everything be planned around people on fixed incomes? What about those of us who aren't on a fixed income? Why should we have to accept subpar meat, produce, etc? Why should we not be able to have acces to fresh, organic, healthy food in our own neighborhood? This article speaks for itself. The difference between Johnnies and WHole Foods is minimal for most of the population of Charlestown.

It absolutely does not miss the point. If you say it does then elaborate on what you said.
Your comment came across as saying, "Shut up about Whole Foods. If you don't like Johnnies then go food shopping in Chelsea." If that's taken out of context or something, then you should elaborate on what you really meant.

I am not looking for an argument... I read the article and great for them that they donate to food shelters, donate 5% to non profit agencies who request it. Many Companies do and I am sure the community appreciates it. I am just saying the everyday people Especially the Elderly, Hardworking families who just can't afford higher prices and choose not to go to food banks, can barely afford Foodmaster never mind Whole Food's I am just saying....

Miller,
That is a cold, hard fact of life. If there are people in the community who are that hard up, then we, their fellow members of the community, should step up to help (dontate food, etc). We shouldn't be forcing people who want a better option than Johnnies to accept food on their tables that they don't consider healthy and fresh.

C-Town is ready for a Whole Foods! The quality is worth the difference in price. It would be nothing but positive for Charlestown, and hey, Stop and Shop isn't that far away. I bet transportation there could be arranged there for folks that need to save $$$. In fact, Stop and Shop has a better coupon program for loyal customers.

How about the Old KofC location!
Did anybody attend the meeting wher they agreed to 99 units of housing to be put there?
Last meeting I attended it was only going to go two stories higher!
Was this another, CNC deal!
So we get another housing development in C-town aren't we lucky, I wonder if the the CNC will have there wy with the curb cut issue resolved before its done ? Does the development have enough parking for the residents? Or are they going to be on the street?
Just questions I would have like answered before the fabulous BRA ok'd the project!
Does anybody have answers?

Toonie & JAP - I recall this project from a few years back, but never recall it being that high? What connection is there between the CNC and BRA? Someone is in bed with someone!! What does MarK Rosenshein on the CNC have to do with this? He's Mr. Zoning now....Inquiring minds want to know. Hey Patch, get all Herald on their a$$es and do some investigative reporting!! Will ya??!!
******Hey Look Everyone!! The CNC and the frauds do read The Patch!! They removed all mention of posting minutes after their monthly meeting. Why would CNC REMOVE that link instead of updating the minutes? Why are they so against keeping the residents of Charlestown informed with what happens at these meetings? Wouldn't they serve us better by keeping US informed?!?! The CNC MUST GO!!! CNC MUST GO!!!!
CNC Mission Statement: "The CNC is responsible for facilitating dialogue within the Charlestown community and between the residents of Charlestown and the City of Boston, State and Local agencies and businesses" WHAT A CROCK OF $HIT!!!!

No way Jay. I'm onto to something here. Even Just a Person is starting to see the light, and he usually disagrees with my posts. Believe me, the more examples of how the CNC is a fraud and failure to our community, the closer we'll be to removing them. Why would they refuse to post meeting minutes? They have been hiding from the residents of Charlestown for far too long....time to start answering some questions I say!!
Wait. We have Danielle Valle-Fitzgerald!! She represents Charlestown. She's our voice to the City of Boston. Why do we need the CNC when we have a young, bright, fresh voice in City Hall?
Hey Danielle, question for you. Doesn't the CNC have to make public record the minutes of these meetings? The City gives them thousands and thousands of dollars, yet we never know the process behind 'Who gets what' and the money trail afterwards. Open up the books!! Don't they have to make their By-laws public as well? Serious question. Don't they have to be more transparent than they are?

They meet on Medford. I have, with emails, not phone calls. I've been to a few meetings, but have never addressed the frauds as to why their site isn't being updated. The fact that they removed the banner stating that minutes will be updated is proof enough that they refuse to keep the residents informed. SHADY!! Each and everyone of them. Hey Tommy Cunha - The community is onto you!! You're supposed to follow your mission statement there pal. Nice work you fraud.
If we have Danielle Valle-Fitzgerald, why do we need the CNC?

Hey Joseph, you are right I do disagree with a lot of things, especially this issue, yes I also think that the CNC is in the bed with the BRA and, I also think it is time to get rid of that organization (BRA ) another don't ask don't tell group. How quickly they can change things that THEY want!
It's all bull---- the CNC supposed to listen to the neighborhood but if you have ever gone to a meeting ,you have to listen to all their bull first, they have the cart before the horse. Tired of them, especially Mark Rosenshein Tom Cunha, and Bill Galvin they are all in bed with someone..
And Lisa I hope you look at the plans it happens to be 7 stories high, not counting the mechanicals.. Go figure !

Joshua Resneck's article from today's Bridge has to be the biggest piece if journalistic crap that has ever graced the front page of a newspaper. Was it supposed to inform or be an editorial? I've tried to give CTown Johnnies the benefit of the doubt, but I bought a lobster roll on Wed. It was marked sell by 9/14 (Fri.) I openned it and realized it smelled a bit odd, took a furtive bite and realized it was ROT! I put it back in the fridge, so that I could return it. By Fri. the last day it could have been sold on and should have been good past that date it had so permeated the fridge with stench, I had to throw everything out. It had to be at least two weeks old at the time of purchase!!!! This is not the only time I have bought food obviously date tampered with and sold as fresh. The smell was so horrid, even in a sealed bag it reeked! One time, it could be an accident--an oversight, twice I question practices and management, three times and you're OUT!
