Spaulding Grand Opening Postponed

The community celebration welcoming the rehabilitation hospital to the Charlestown Navy Yard has been delayed because of the citywide lockdown and manhunt for the suspect in the Boston Marathon bombing.

Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital's grand opening, scheduled for Sunday, April 21 in the Charlestown Navy Yard, has been postponed in light of recent events.

Spaulding officials announced on Friday afternoon that the event had been postponed and would be rescheduled at a later date.

Below is the full announcement from Spaulding spokeswoman Rebecca Kaiser:

Dear Friends and Neighbors:

Find out what's happening in Charlestownwith free, real-time updates from Patch.

As we watch the events of the past 24 hours unfold, Spaulding has decided that the most prudent decision is to cancel this Sunday’s Community Open House and Health Care. We are hopeful to reschedule this event at a later time.

Although we are not certain whether, how or when we will be able to celebrate the momentous occasion of the opening of the new Spaulding, we do know that this institution and its extremely talented staff will transform the art and science of rehabilitation medicine for years to come. We also know that this new hospital will be a place of hope and healing, of learning and innovation and of grace and compassion.

Our hearts go out to the entire community and especially to the loved ones of those who have lost their lives this week due to these tragic events.  For those who have survived with catastrophic injuries, rest assured that Spaulding and our extremely dedicated and talented staff will provide the best rehabilitation care available to these survivors and their families. Moreover, rest assured that we will help them to achieve a quality of life that they likely cannot even imagine at this early juncture in their recovery.

From this historic site, where powerful naval ships were built and renewed for nearly two centuries, Spaulding will carry on a proud tradition which says that strength can be recovered, damage can be repaired and defeat is never an option.

Please be safe and may this horrific episode in our lives come to an end soon.
