Letter: Marijuana Images Send Wrong Message

This letter was submitted by a Charlestown organization.

With the recent legalization of marijuana in Washington state, pictures were published of young adults gleefully using the drug in public.

We believe this sends the wrong message to our young people, especially pre-teens who typically look up to or admire young adults. Parents should consider pointing out that because something is legal does not mean it is acceptable.

Marijuana is a proven “gateway drug,” and for those who move on to stronger drugs the battle back is difficult and lifelong. The devastation along the way is something that is all too familiar; every effort should be made to avoid it.

Mike Charbonnier, CHAD President

prooven gateway drug? .. umm.... what? . prooven scientifically or from your butt?. It's as much a gateway drug as alcohol or tobacco, or starbuck lates. It doesn't even cause withdrawl symtpoms or cause real addiction like coffee does.. yet that's completely unregulated age wise.

Another man who speaks the truth!
Thank you.

"because something is legal does not mean it is acceptable."
Ummm.. that's kind of exactly what that means. Police arrest you for doing unacceptable things, and don't arrest you for doing acceptable things.

Oh, and saying marijuana is a "gateway drug" is like saying that having sex with someone is guaranteed to give you an STD.

@Jeffrey Knight...

The power of 'reasoning' is a wonderful thing.
Well said, Sir.

Type II diabetes is doing more damage to our children, and adults, than smoking a plant. Teach our children (and adults) to eat a healthy meal instead of stuffing their faces with fast food, processed food and 1000cal coffee drinks.

@Joseph...

Excellent point!

The scariest stuff: prescription medications. How many deaths are they responsible for? And, they are legal.

I smoked my first joint in December, 1967, at the tender age of 21.

Now, a mere 45 years later, I still smoke pot. I have never 'graduated' to 'harder' drugs.

I am living proof that prohibitionist propaganda is a fallacy...a blatant lie.

The worst experience I had with marijuana was spending 5 years in Federal Prison for a pot offense.

And, I am as harmless as a Beagle puppy.

I wrote about the escapades that led to my 'vacation.' I admit, I had a great time...no one was injured, no one was killed...there were no victims. We were Americans pursuing happiness in our own way...harming no one nor their property.

The book: Shoulda Robbed a Bank

I would be honored by your review. It's available at Amazon.

@ TheMaskedTruthsayer...

Maybe I could have escaped, a movie been made, and lived happily ever after on the royalties.
But, it didn't work out that way.

Many thanks for your comment.

Mr. Charbonnier...you are the CHAD president?

I think it would behoove you to do the smallest amount of research. If what you have posted here is what you are telling your members, you are doing them a tremendous disservice.

Unless, of course, you are the ONLY member.

@ chex faxts...

Then, as a police officer, he should be better informed as to the laws he is enforcing. Posting erroneous information destroys his credibility.

Many thanks for your comment.

I know this police officer. He is excellent and has a great reputation in law enforcement for professionalism. I agree with his comments. We need to send a positive message to young people that drugs are not the answer. Hard work, academics, sports, school activities and discipline - the example we need to set for our young people. Then set what you think is a good example. After than, what one chooses to do is up to them. If drugs are not the answer, then why are you not picketing bars and pharmaceutical companies?

Another "oinker" slurping up gruel at the drug war trough. He is desperately tryingvto keep his drug treatment gravy train on track but that's going to be a losing battle for him. The drug war's days are numbered, along with his.

BTW, the gateway theory has been disproven time & time again, even by the givt's own National Institute of Health in their 1999 report. You may be entitled to your own opinions but not your own facts. Intellectually dishonest to present the gateway theory as proven when it has been thoroughly debunked.

Been a regular smoker for 45 years now. 59 years old and retired after a long successful career. Go blow these lies out of your butt somewhere else. People here know the facts. You obviously don't, so go read a book and learn something instead of spreading your lies.

Stupidity is a gateway drug. How about big Pharma? Marijuana has a lot of practical uses, and just like a lot of things in society, it's about moderation, not abstinence. While I like the occasional soda, the reality is there is a ton of sugar in that. Is that healthy? Do people get addicted to the sugar in it? Do people move on to baked goods, Twinkies (RIP), Bon-Bon's and Funnybones? Maybe we should outlaw these images too. In a country where we can't even limit the sale of assault rifles are we really all that worried about the images of someone smoking pot? How about educating people instead of trying to conceal everything. Alcohol is a much bigger concern for me than marijuana will ever be. As for kids using, that comes down to good parenting.
