Jenny's Pizza a Charlestown Staple

Jenny's has been serving up subs and pizzas to Charlestown since 1970.

Charlestown is full of small businesses. Charlestown Patch will be featuring at least one each week -- whether a restaurant, florist, salon, etc.. Let us know if there's a particular one you'd like to read about in this weekly series.

A good neighborhood sub shop is a real gem. Modest but distinctive, Jenny’s Pizza and Sub has been a Charlestown staple since 1970. They have made their home at 320 Medford Street for the last 12 years.

“We all (the employees) grew up in Charlestown. I know my customers by name,” owner Joey Lacey said. “People have called looking for Margarita pizzas. We’re a pepperoni or cheese kind of place. We’re a jean and t-shirt kind of place.”

Jenny’s is a sponsor and supporter of multiple Charlestown youth organizations, listed on both their menus and their website:

Charlestown Against Drugs (CHAD)

Charlestown Boys and Girls Club

Charlestown Girls CYO Softball

Charlestown Lacrosse and Learning Center

Charlestown Little League

Charlestown Mothers Association

Charlestown Nursery School

Charlestown Youth Basketball Program

Charlestown Youth Football & Cheering

Charlestown Youth Hockey

Good Shepherd School

Harvest on Vine

Life Focus Center

Old Charlestown School Girls Association

Special Townies

Upon entering the small, intimate establishment with no sitting room, one places their order and cannot help but gaze up at a whiteboard over the grill with trivia questions:

-       How long is the gestation period for dogs?

-       Who was the spokesperson for the local department store Bradlees?

-       What is the minimum age for a U.S. President?

-       Vatican City has no military. Who provides the security?

But the trivia question most commonly asked to the staff is “Who is Jenny?” Lacey said that she was the wife of the first owner, some 42 years ago. “There have been three owners in the time that Jenny’s has been open,” Lacey said. “We kept the name because we want to keep it a fixture in town.”

On behalf of Charlestown Little League, I would like to extend our deep appreciation to Jenny's for all they have done, and continue to do, to support our program. Small businesses giving back to the community is part of what being a "Townie" is all about and Jenny's gets high marks. Also, their "chicken parm" and "steak and cheese" subs are "wicked pissah."
