Today is Tuesday, Feb. 28. Here are five things you need to know:

1. Winter Warm-Up on March 1. Parris Landing’s expansive lobby is the setting, once again, for the Friends annual meeting. The annual event combines a social gathering with public recognitions. This year, awards will be given to Mayor Thomas Menino and Charlestown Against Drugs. Mayor Menino was selected because of his work over the years in keeping Boston a strong and vibrant city that has weathered the recent economic crisis better than almost every major city in the country. The award to CHAD is in recognition of the relentless work of people like the late Peter Looney and Michael Charbonnier in working on a serious problem that impacts many people throughout Charlestown. The public is invited to attend this free event on March 1 from 6-8 PM located at Parris Landing on First Avenue in the Navy Yard. 

2. Best Charlestown sandwiches. We kicked off our first “Best of Charlestown” feature Monday morning. So far, we have a clear leader (Tony Ann’s), but voting will remain open through Friday morning.

3. Local books available locally. Last week, we had a feature about Terry Phelps, who recently self-published a memoir about his youth in Charlestown. Olivia Browning of Charlestown announced yesterday that the store has Phelps’ book in stock.

4. CNC Meeting On Possible 63 Rutherford Ave. Development. The Charlestown Neighborhood Council will conduct a community meeting tonight relative to the development at 63 Rutherford Ave. It will begin at 7 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Lower Hall.

5. MGH/Spaulding Community Health Assessment Meeting For Precincts 4, 5, And 7. An MGH/Spaulding Community Needs Assessment meeting has been scheduled for tonight at St. Francis de Sales Bishop Lawton Hall at 7:00. Participants at each meeting will fill out a survey, and then participate in discussion groups.
