English Reports Olives Ready, Building Not Quite

The business could apply for its last two permits in the coming days.

Olives would be ready to open, chef Todd English told the Boston Licensing Board Tuesday, but the building it resides in still needed work.

English told the board the restaurant itself met the fire department’s standards, but the City Square building where it makes its home did not, according to Universal Hub.

Now, English said, his crew has repaired sprinkler systems and other details and the business could apply for the remaining two permits it needs to open in the next few days.

The board will vote Thursday on whether or not Olives should be allowed to keep its liquor license, Universal Hub reports.

English told the board in December that the restaurant, which has been closed since a May 2010 fire gutted it, could open in January. January has come and gone, as has half of February, but Olive’s remains closed.

Charlestown Patch called and emailed the company that runs Olive’s at the beginning of the month to get a status update, but received no response.

Meanwhile, Charlestown Patch readers have reported that workers have been active inside the restaurant and work trucks have been parked outside—in one case, obstructing the path of the 92 bus.

Let's not hope they get their liquor license. I'm sure there's a lot of good restaurateurs who would love to get their hands on that space.

Matt here's a poll idea - who actually cares that Olives is re-opening. Or alternatively, who would prefer to see Charlestown attract a better, more unique restaurant?

I would like to see something like an Olive Garden or anything but Olive's. Todd English is arrogant I don't even like watching him on TV. There has to be something better than this for Charlestown.

Trust me, the neighborhood was fine, thank you, before Todd came along.

I don't understand all the hate for Olives and Todd English? Yes, he's taken his sweet time reopening his restaurant, but such is the life of a business owner who's having financial difficulties. Is it wrong to assume he's still paying rent/mortgage on the property? Sure, Todd English is a celebrity with an ego...shocker. I wonder if all you haters would have the same attitude or lack of patience if this "celebrity chef" was a local athlete or the like? If anything, I find it frustrating that I haven't been able to get a great martini when I've wanted one. I'm looking forward to the reopening and pray that what he opens fulfills everyone's need for a great place to eat and drink.

Understood Daniel. Unless he is purposely starting these fires, I wouldn't assess too much blame on him, agreed? Now regards to trash and grease on the streets, while it's the responsibility of Todd and Co. to keep this area clean, I wouldn't stop at them. Just look at our own trash collectors who leave garbage all over after they come through on Wednesday. These guys have zero respect for our neighborhood, so it wouldn't surprise me one bit to see them dropping trash or spilling grease and not cleaning up afterwards. Of course it's on the establishment to keep the area clean, but everyone needs to see the bigger picture when it comes to trash and such.
