Does the Navy Yard Need a New Fountain?

The BRA is proposing replacing the Shipyard Park feature with a kid-friendly splash pad. But does the community want it?

At the end of last summer, the Boston Redevelopment Authority fenced off the water fountain in the Charlestown Navy Yard's Shipyard Park in an attempt to keep children from playing there.

But for area residents, many who have used the fountain as a way to cool off on hot summer days for more than 30 years, the fence was an outrage.

To help ease the neighborhood's concerns, the BRA developed plans to install a new water play area for kids in the Navy Yard, and on Tuesday officials held a public meeting where they revealed those plans—a new kid-friendly "splash pad" to be located near Navy Yard's existing playground.

But do residents want a replacement? If the Shipyard Park fountain has to remain off limits for children, does the Navy Yard need an alternative spot for folks to cool off and congregate during the summer months? Or should the Yard's green space be preserved?

Yes please! A splash pad of a material safe for kids (like the plans shown) would be a great addition to our town.

The current fountain works fine and is safe. There has been no reports of accidents and even if there were when kids play there will always be accident. We cannot insulate our kids from every possible issue in life. It would be better if the BRA just put a lifeguard at the fountain instead of replacing a very unique feature in the Navy Yard.

Heehaw, your ame says it all. You're the idiot. The BRA just wants to waste$ we do not have. If parents want a bubble boy type water park, let them band together & pay for it. If parents r paying attention to their kids at the park instead of their ipod/pad/ phone, their supervision will keep the kids safe. Parents and pols today seem to want to bleach the life out of our kids lives..
If they skin their knee...its called life !!!

On the other hand-- ok, make a new park. The neighborhood dogs will love the existing facility! The city won't give us a dog land park..
Lets make this the first Boston dog water park!

Dearest, dearest B. Ke,
We can certainly come together on the call for a
dog park. However, without respect to our differing attitudes about what it means to be a child or a parent, I think we need to mind the legal realities of our world. Though I doubt that Boston does not have the money for this project, I know that we don't have the money for a lawsuit arising from an accident on city property.

In addition, why do you hate children?

No matter what they build, dogs will pee there, kids will fall there and the tax payers will pick up the tab.

Liquidate the antiquated "Authorities" of beantown: BRA, MWRA, BHA, MBTA, all the flipping "A's."

Shoulda been a state trooper with a secret toll road to call my own...damn!

The city had two large water displays: Navy Yard and City Hall. The City Hall works was even bigger (you can still see the outline of it in the bricks in the North West corner). It too was deemed unsafe as people would often wade into it. As far as I know no one ever got hurt in it.

It's a shame people can't be trusted to use their heads or manage their kids. So beautiful open water works have to be shut down. I wonder what Austin TX is doing with their large water display (seen in many futuristic movies).

the real issue was that Flagship Wharf wanted the teenagers and skateboarders out of the park.

The fountain has served as a welcome relief for decades, as a water feature and play area. Are there statistics of injuries? The decision making could be more transparent. What else is planned for that space?
