Charlestown YMCA Aims to Attract Young Families with New Programs
The YMCA and the Constitution Inn have separated to become two independent institutions. The YMCA has launched new daytime programs to try to draw mothers and children.
The following press release was submitted to Patch from the Charlestown YMCA.
After more than 18 years of sharing space and a name, the Constitution Inn and the YMCA will separate to become The Constitution Inn and the Charlestown YMCA.
The Charlestown YMCA is stepping out to attract young professionals and families in the area to take advantage of the full range of health and wellness the Y offers onsite. The Y facility offers a basketball court, a 25-yard lap pool, personal training, group classes, swim classes, brand new Cybex strength training equipment, expanded weight room area and newly renovated locker rooms.
In addition, The Y will launch daytime classes, aimed to draw local moms who are looking for socializing opportunities for their infants and toddlers.
“It was time to differentiate ourselves and change the name to the Charlestown YMCA,” said Steven Telesmanick, executive director of the Charlestown YMCA. “We want to make it clear that we are here to help build the community, bring people together and offer more affordable fitness options for locals. We hope to make a larger impact with this new change.” A membership at the Charlestown YMCA for adults is just $41 and $31 for young adults.
The Charlestown Y is also implementing a new board of advisors to provide leadership, counsel, and seek financial resources to implement new services to meet the city’s needs. The goal of the board is to help implement programs to build stronger families, youth and a community as a whole.
“The Y fulfills the fitness and socialization needs of residents and now, with an active board of advisors we can do more programming and launch new efforts that will benefit the entire community,” said Dave Whelan, a lifelong Charlestown resident and chairman of the board. “We want to show all our residents the resources that are here for them at the Y and throughout the Navy Yard.”
The Charlestown YMCA is one of 13 facilities within the Greater Boston YMCA, which are focused on and committed to youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Located at 150 Third Ave. in the Charlestown Navy Yard, the Charlestown YMCA is adjacent to The Constitution Inn, known for its comfortable, quiet and affordable accommodations. Guests at the hotel will still have access to the fitness facilities.
