Students from Charlestown’s Warren Prescott K-8 and Harvard/Kent Schools, along with Superintendent Carol R. Johnson joined Matthew J. Bonner, Commanding Officer of USS Constitution, Anne Grimes Rand, President of USS Constitution Museum and Courageous Sail aboard Boston's most iconic ship, Monday. 

As part of the expansion of BPS summer programming, the students from are spending July and August developing a prototype smartphone app. The app will be used to help young visitors conduct scavenger hunts within the Charlestown Navy Yard featuring the USS Constitution and the USS Constitution Museum. USSConstitution is the oldest commissioned warship afloat in the world and welcomes over half a million visitors a year.

The Summer Learning Project is generously supported by the Opportunity Agenda and the Wallace Foundation. The Project addresses the knowledge, skills, and experiences young people need to acquire in order to succeed in school, college, work, and life. This year, BPS and the Summer Learning Project are partnering with 48 Warren Prescott K-8 and Harvard/Kent School students to use the USS Constitution Museum and Courageous Sailing as learning environments.

For the next three years, Liberty Mutual Insurance will underwrite free public school programming at the USS Constitution Museum in recognition of the War of 1812 Bicentennial.
