Charlestown Icers Star at Tournament

Conal Lynch and Brendan Collier take to the ice in an elite summer tournament

Of the hundreds of hockey players that competed at last week’s Hockey Night in Boston Major Showcase, only two hail from Charlestown... and they were two of the best in the tournament.

Malden Catholic superstar (and Boston University-commit) Brendan Collier and Boston Latin’s Conal Lynch suited up for the defending champions, Greater Boston, at the HNIB Major Showcase last week, held at the Haverhill Valley Forum.

Collier and Lynch are both coming off great seasons: Collier scored the state-championship winning goal in the Super 8 final, and Lynch led his squad to the Division 2 North quarterfinals before falling to eventual state champion, Tewksbury.

However, for both players, representing Charlestown is a matter of pride amongst the sea of prep school and junior stars from around the country.

“Yeah, it definitely means something,” Collier said. “People hear that we’re from Charlestown and some great players have come out of Charlestown. So it definitely means something.” Collier was a member of last year’s Greater Boston championship team.

Over 400 players took part in the  Major Showcase, but Lynch was the lone skater representing Boston Latin.

“It shows a lot because not many great players come from Latin,” Lynch said. “Playing against these types of players, it’s good to show that Latin can present good players like that too.”

While Collier has already committed to college, Lynch is hoping to get noticed by one of the many prep school and juniors scouts that were at the tournament.

“I’m looking into some prep schools right now,” Lynch said. “Hopefully they were watching me out here.”

While Lynch was looking to play his best to impress the scouts, Collier was having fun playing against some of his Malden Catholic teammates.

“It’s really fun,” Collier said of going against some of his MC teammates. “Whether I’m playing with or against them, it’s just really fun.”

The tournament ran through the end of the week with the playoffs starting last Thursday.
