Bunker Hill Community College Students Win National Science Foundation Grant

Funding will send students to Scotland to study IT.

Eight Bunker Hill Community College students will travel to Scotland next summer to study information technologies with funding from the National Science Foundation.

In Scotland the students will conduct research projects at Glasgow Caledonian University and choose internships in technology firms including CISCO, Oracle or Microsoft.

"It is extremely important in this global arena to have a working knowledge of other countries and cultures. There's no better way than to experience it first-hand," said Deborah Biosvert, the principle investigator at Boston Area Advanced Technological Education Connection, which is administering the grant.

Bunker Hill Professor Paula Velluto, who teaches in the college's IT department, said, "We're hoping [students] will get to experience another culture and experience and learn how another country deals with technology programs, how they look at a university in another country."

The $55,000 grant will fund Bunker Hill students who are continuing their education at UMass Boston in fall 2011.
