Arrest Made in Charlestown Landscaper Dog Poisoning Case

On Friday police announced they arrested a 53-year-old man suspected of trying to poison dogs with hot dogs soaked in chemicals.

Police made an arrest in a case of alleged dog poisoning that shocked the neighborhood.

Police announced Friday that 53-year-old landscaper Kenneth Hyland is in custody, suspected of soaking hot dogs in antifreeze and leaving them for pets to eat. An area outside the Bricklayers Apprentice Fund at 550 Medford St. is the site of the controversy.

The poisoned wieners may have been intended as a warning to dog owners to pick up after their animals.

At least three dog owners recently told police at District A-15 they saw a landscaper at that location leave what they believe to be poisoned hot dog pieces on the grass.

One resident who reported the incident told police that he saw the landscaper with “a [five]-gallon bucket of a blue/green solution believed to be antifreeze with hot dogs soaking inside.”

The witness said that he saw the landscaper spread the hotdog pieces around in the grass after completing his work.

“The witness confronted the suspect, stating ‘are you trying to poison the dogs?’” a police report read.

“The suspect replied ‘yes,’” the witness told police. The pair argued before the landscaper left. Once the landscaper had gone, the witness collected the hot dog pieces in his own five-gallon bucket before informing police of the incident. Two neighbors accompanied him to the district A-15 police department. They told officers that they had seen the same man performing the landscaping at earlier times and had noticed hotdog pieces left behind after his departure.

Durty Harry’s Doggie Boutique posted on Facebook that several customers have reported having sick dogs, possibly as a result of the hot dog pieces.

Police took the collected hot dogs as evidence.

The woman who answered the phone at the Bricklayers Apprentice Fund earlier this week said that no one within the organization would speak to the press on this matter.

Hyland will face a judge on Monday, police said.

Could this be the same Kenneth Hyland? This is from seven years ago, but the age matches the recently-arrested Hyland.

Guys got serious issues, keep him away from children and dogs. Damn Bricklayers!

An Everett man was arrested yesterday, accused of trying to abduct a minor in Boston, police said. Kenneth Hyland, 46, was charged with unlicensed driving and attempted abduction. Police said the suspect approached a 13-year-old male who was walking home from school about 3 p.m. at Marion and Bennington streets in Boston, identified himself as a Chelsea police officer, and grabbed and frisked the victim's backpack, saying he was searching for weapons. The victim told the man to stop and called for his father, who exited a nearby home and saw the suspect run down Marion Street and flee in a yellow van. Everett police stopped a similar vehicle on Broadway, and Boston detectives and the victim and his family identified Hyland at the scene. He is to be arraigned this morning in Malden District Court.

SuzanneJ, for your information, dog feces/urine is highly toxic to human health. Dog walkers roaming the streets promoting their pets to relieve themselves in public is a health crime. A dogs biological matter can cause death to those with depressed immune systems and the worms in dog feces can cause blindness in children and miscarriages to pregnant woman. Dog feces can also carry MRSA (FLESH EATING BACTERIA), Salmonella, E-coli...etc.

Even if the dog owner picks up, the contaminants left behind poses a serious health risk to all humans and other dogs.

Moreover, Its disgusting to see these irresponsible pet owners using our streets as a toilet. Walking around town with a bag full of crap shows what type of subhuman they are - classless. A collar and leash is also cruelty to animals. Some owners need to wear one.

Bob where did you get your information from? Your way off here.

Human or animal feces or urine is not toxic! What I think you're tying to say it's not sanitary (feces at least) as it harbors bacteria. Urine in its self does not transmit bacteria, but, once expelled will breakdown, and can support bacteria in the open environment (thats why it smells).

As far as Salmonella or MRSA, Dogs who are fed proper dog food or cooked human food have no way of being infected (getting infected from a dead bird or rodent is about the only way). In fact your chances of being infected directly are far greater.

As to dog Vs Human bacteria review this: http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/bio99/bio99179.htm A dogs biology is different enough than human to have different strains of bacteria so what infects them won't infect you. You're more likely to get infected from your baby's feces.

Lastly, good hygiene (washing ones hands before eating) will protect you from E-Coli as you have to eat it for it to be harmful.

People with suppressed immune systems wouldn't be walking around without any protection as the unfiltered air would be more of a risk than anything on the ground (even the little bit of feces that may not have been picked up).

I'm not saying dog owners shouldn't take responsibility for their pets messes they should! And, if I see someone not picking up I'd be the first to scold them and hand them a spare bag to pick it up.

Dan, wake up. Your website link is about a dogs mouth germs not feces and urine. You sound ignorant if you dont think animal waste is not toxic to humans. Go to Massachusetts Department of Public Health and do a search on "dog waste", there you will find the dangers of dog waste to human health. Or go to CDC.gov.

Dan, you know nothing about Communicable Diseases...you need to take a Microbiology class at BHCC and educate yourself.

Carol -

Sorry to say your wrong, dog waste is not toxic by direct contact. Just like your waste is not toxic to you if you touch it. Again, I think your using the wrong word here. Something that is toxic would be poisonous (as in the case of the anti-freze used to poison the hot dogs).

My comment addressed Bobs direct comments on bacteria harm as that was his concern.

That is not to say feces don't have health risks (human or dog) they do! A parasite can be passed to others through its feces, as a dog owner I'm well aware of this. Here's a good run down of the different parasites that could be present http://doodycalls.com/resources_toxic_dog_waste.asp Thats why I always pick up my dogs waste.

Feces also fowl our water when the runoff gets into our streams or oceans (any animals), another good reason to pickup ones dogs droppings.

BTW - My minor in collage was microbiology so I don't think I need to go to BHCC to study it again.

I know we should leave politics out but with the arrest of Kenneth Hyland the following should be known: Mr.Hyland is the Brother-in-Law of Charlestown's State Representative; Eugene O'Flaherty. Mr. O'Flaherty is married to Hyland's sister; Patricia Hyland...all are originally from CHELSEA. Check out this child abduction arrest on him back in 2005:http://www.boston.com/news/local/articles/2005/11/23/petition_to_ban_gay_nuptials_due_today/

Are you aware the O'Flaherty is on the judiciary committiee: http://boston.cbslocal.com/2012/03/22/keller-large-beacon-hill-politician-lashes-out-at-media/

It would appear Hyland has the "LAW" on his side. That is why "Just a person!" it is important to know whom one is related. And there is no "if so" this is a FACT. No wonder O'Flaherty is AGAINST a bill trying to extend the statue of limitations on child sexual abuse. Check out his brother in laws rap sheet for yourself!

Are you hoping to be able to eat off of the sidewalk? It's a city. I've never heard of or met one person in my life that has gotten sick from dog feces on the sidewalk.Feel free to post some article you find online of that one in million case of the 1 person who did but I guarantee you never met one.I don't even have a dog and I can't believe what I'm reading. Anyone who is disturbed enough to justify killing a dog over a patch of grass will eventually justify killing a person for something equally as ridiculous. What do u think your vegetables grow in?? Sorry to tell you ,but its shit. Manure from all kinds of dirty filthy farm animals. Very organic :) People are responsible for the waste of their animals but no one should die over it.

He is not a normal politican he actually cares whatt happens in this town and if he can help with something he normally does and not just when he up for re-election either. He is a great man that truely cares and just because he is our state rep does not mean anyone has a right to make him feel guilty by association. I am sure if he had a crystal ball to see what everyone was doing at every minute then he would have stepped in but until then this can not really be held against him. Ben - So ALL dog walkers leave the dogs mess and they are using people's private property? You've see this with your own eyes? is that correct? I find that very hard to believe!

As to public property - The word 'PUBLIC' means for all to use not a limited subset of people.

In fact, the whole idea of public space was for holding animals and as a meeting space. The Boston Common was just that, a place for cows and sheep to be grazed until 1830! Here's a link to wikipedia on it's history http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boston_Common so that goes against the idea public space is not open to animals. I'll agree someones private property should be respected. It should be posted and/or have a non-toxic repellent (PetCo and PetSmart both carry it) placed on it to remind the dogs to stay off.

As to our streets many of them had horse drawn trollies Heres a link of what they looked like http://www.railroadinfo.com/features/eot/horsecar.html so the amount of fecal matter was much more than what our dogs put out today and most was not even cleaned up. And thats not including the fire brigade and the milk man and others who used horses. So again, the streets were open to all to use.

As to someone being licked and then have all of the arms & legs removed thats an urban legion that has no fact. The only thing dog feces can transmit to humans is parasites. But that assumes the dog has them to begin with. Most don't, just like you or me don't have them. If you did you'd know it!

Kelly, you need to get a grip

Public is just that 'open for all' Using a public way and cleaning up there mess is perfectly legal.

It's clear you have a problem with dogs, others don't. You should respect them as they do to you.

I'll agree some people fail in cleaning up after their dogs and they do need to be held accountable for their lack of action. With that said, most people do pickup after their dogs.

Calling people names and spouting off over and over again doesn't move the dialog forward.

I mean it is private property and he can do on it what he wants Leaving out Hot dogs that where in a bucket that had anti freeze in it is not illegal .... putting them on HIS PRIVATE PROPERTY Is again not an Illegal act is it ??... The LAW was only broken when Dog Walkers Illegally Trespassed on HIS property its not like he feed it to a dog ... Now I am just saying not sticking up for him ... I know my dog peeing comments even though I meant it as a joke Ryan and Brian and others have taken it to another level but Ill ask a question again What he did on HIS Property was not an illegal act they as in the hot dogs only became an issue when Dog Owners trespassed on his property .. Bunker Hill - I'm not a lawyer, but I'm guessing it has to do with intent. He purposely soaked hot dogs in poison with the intent to cause harm. He knew his poison soaked hot dogs would be eaten by the dogs. He sought out a way to poison and inflict harm on animals and that I believe, is a crime. This isn't his property, it is the Bricklayers, correct? For him to get off, he would need to have the support of the Bricklayers. I see your point, however I thoroughly disagree with it (this prick should get what he deserves).

Janet - Stop yelling. It's obnoxious. If you can't read what you're typing, get a new script.

Dog owners - Respect your neighbors and neighborhood and clean up after your pets. It's a rather simple solution. G'day.

Good question Make Bunker Hill. First, according to code, all public and private property must be safe. Second, if there was a sign posted: "No Trespassing" then that could be his loop hole to freedom. And this will get throw out because no human or dog was hurt.

Larry - Even with a 'Not Trespass" sign you're still liable if you create an unsafe environment. If on the other hand a building was not safe to enter, you then have an out, as it was an act of god that made the building unsafe (fire, earthquake etc...).

A story that made it in the news media around 15 years ago about a small bodega owner in Atlanta GA, if I remember correctly. He bobby-Trapped the window above the doorway as thieves kept breaking in. He electrified it and placed Danger & No Trespass signs all over and still got a manslaughter conviction as the 18yr old kid died by electrocution trying to break in.

In this case the person who did the act and the owner of the properly could both be held liable if a person or dog was injured or died in both criminal or civil court. So if Hyland is convicted in the criminal case the dog owners could file a civil case against Hyland and the Bricklayers Union for both the vet costs and their emotional harm.

If I was the Bricklayers I would get in front of this and contact the owners who's dogs got sick. I would offer to pay the vet costs and a little more for the hardship to save them selves the pain of the bad PR and the costs of an lengthly court battle with a heart felt apology and statement they did not know what Hyland did in return for not suing them.

THIS IS THE LAST TIME I AM GOING TO ADDRESS THIS I USE CAPS BECAUSE IT'S EASIER FOR ME TO SEE. SO GET A GRIP. AS FOR MY FRIEND WHO WORKS FOR THE LAWYER NONE OF THE CLIENTS HAVE A PROBLEM WITH IT EITHER. THIS IS ABOUT A MAN TRYING TO POISON DOGS NOT A PLACE TO TELL SOMEONE WHO HAS A HARD TIME SEEING HOW TO TYPE

Janet M, I have read your comments and I have to say your wrong. Cleaning up after your pet is just your excuse to say your responsible when actually you are irresponsible. You should not use public areas for your pet to deficate or urinate. Do you have a special bag for # 1? If you dont own property and have no where to take your dog to mess...then you should not own a dog. Your problem should not be the communities.

PAM FYI THE REASON I HAVE A DOG IS FOR OUR SON WHO HAS AUTISM. SO DON'T YOU SIT THERE & TELL ME WHAT I SHOULD & SHOULDN'T DO. IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH OWNING MY OWN PROPERTY & IF YOU HAD REALLY READ MY COMMENTS YOU WOULD HAVE READ THAT MY DOGS LIKE SOME DOGS NEED TO BE WALKED TO GO THAT'S THE WAY THE WERE TRAINED WAY BEFORE I GOT THEM. AND NOT EVERYONE CAN AFFORD TO OWN THEIR OWN PROPERTY OR LIVES IN THE CITY WHERE THEY WORK & DON'T HAVE A YARD BUT STILL THAT DON'T GIVE YOU THE RIGHT TO TELL ANYONE WHAT THE SHOULD OR SHOULDN'T OWN.. I HAPPEN TO LIVE IN A SMALL TOWN WHERE PEOPLE ARE DOG OWNERS & DON'T SAY MUCH ABOUT IT. YOU NEED TO GET A LIFE & MYOB. AND IF AN AREA IS PUBLIC IT'S FOR EVERYONE NOT JUST CERTAIN PEOPLE.

Your claim that your son has autism has nothing to do with the discussion at hand.

Also, I will add to what others have said: please stop using all caps. While you're at it, please learn basin punctuation. Your posts are almost unreadable.

OWEN IT HAS EVERY THING TO DO WITH IT WHEN SOME BUSY BODY TELLS ME I SHOULDN'T OWN A DOG JUST BECAUSE I DON'T OWN MY OWN PROPERTY. AND FOR THE LAST TIME I USE CAPS BECAUSE IT'S EASIER FOR ME TO SEE. AND IT & PUNCTUATION HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE DISCUSSION A LOT LESS AS TO WHY I HAVE A DOG.

Ok, you're dead set on using all caps. It's already been explained to you that it is considered the equivelant of shouting, so I won't beat a dead horse. Also, punctuation has everything to do with a written discussion. Without it your words are a jumbled mess. Do you blog with no punctuation as well?

I don't see where anyone tried telling you that you shouldn't have a dog because you don't own property. They said that you shouldn't let your dog use public places for relieving themselves. Plenty of people own property in Charlestown and do not have outdoor space for a dog.

Janet -

Don't waste your breath, both Pam & Larry are likely fake users someone made to cover their tracks (most likely the same person). If you click on their names they have only posted in this one thread.

You many want to get someone who knows computers to help you out in adjusting the system font and/or size to something larger. My great aunt had lost her vision and likewise used Caps all of the time until I fixed here system for her.

Her eyesight got so bad we had to get a magnifying camera/display setup so she could read here mail and newspapers (she didn't like reading online).

Janet - I'm not an IT guy by trade, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night. Go into your control panel, choose 'display', then click on the 'settings' tab. You'll see "Screen Resolution." Lower the resolution, that may help by increasing the size of your display. You'll have to move your desktop icons, but that is easy. Or get a new script.
