The Max Warburg Courage Curriculum's 21st Annual Awards Luncheon

The Max Warburg Courage Curriculum held its 21st annual Awards Luncheon on May 10th at the Boston Park Plaza Hotel, honoring 45 sixth grade students from Boston Public Schools and surrounding communities.  The event marks the release of The Courage of Boston’s Children, Volume XXI, a collection of essays on the topic of courage, written by students.  The luncheon was a culmination of the organization’s yearlong English Language Arts program, and was attended by over 330 honored students and their families, teachers, and principals, as well as longtime friends and supporters of The Max Warburg Courage Curriculum, including John Sears, Sherry Leventhal, Ann Hall, Fred Warburg, Betsy Cabot, Graham and Ann Gund, and Nancy Coolidge.

Mayor Thomas M. Menino addressed the audience, and presented each of the 45 students with their Max Warburg Fellow medals, alongside Stephanie Warburg, Boston Public Schools Superintendent Carol Johnson, Secretary of Education for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Paul Reville, and Northeastern University Vice President for Public Affairs Bob Gittens.

Newton author Mitali Perkins delivered the keynote.  Each student received a copy of Ms. Perkins' most recent novel, Bamboo People, which was recognized as a Junior Library Guild Selection, was named a YALSA Top 10 Best Fiction Award for Young Adults and received starred reviews from Publishers Weekly and School Library Journal.
